Our primary objective was to perform a meta-analysis and meta-regression to evaluate the effects of diets supplemented with calcium salts of palm fatty acids (CSPF) compared with nonfat supplemented control diets (CON) on nutrient digestibility and production responses of lactating dairy cows. Our secondary objective was to perform a meta-analysis to evaluate whether experimental design affects production responses to supplemental CSPF. The data set was formed from 33 peer-reviewed publications with CSPF supplemented at ≤3% diet dry matter. We analyzed the interaction between experimental design (continuous vs. change-over) and treatments (CON vs. CSPF) to evaluate whether experimental design affects responses to CSPF (Meta.1). Regardless of experimental design, we evaluated the effects of CSPF compared with CON on nutrient digestibility and production responses of lactating dairy cows by meta-analysis (Meta.2) and meta-regression (Meta.3) approaches. In Meta.1, there was no interaction between treatments and experimental design for any variable. In Meta.2, compared with CON, CSPF reduced dry matter intake [DMI, 0.56 ± 0.21 kg/d (±SE)] and milk protein content (0.05 ± 0.02 g/100 g), increased neutral detergent fiber (NDF) digestibility (1.60 ± 0.57 percentage units), the yields of milk (1.53 ± 0.56 kg/d), milk fat (0.04 ± 0.02 kg/d), and 3.5% fat corrected milk (FCM, 1.28 ± 0.60 kg/d), and improved feed efficiency [energy corrected milk (ECM)/DMI, 0.08 kg/kg ± 0.03]. There was no effect of treatment for milk protein yield, milk fat content, body weight, body weight change, or body condition score. Compared with CON, CSPF reduced the yield of de novo milk fatty acids (FA) and increased the yields of mixed and preformed milk FA. In Meta.3, we observed that each 1-percentage-unit increase of CSPF in diet dry matter reduced DMI, increased NDF digestibility, tended to increase FA digestibility, increased the yields of milk, milk fat, and 3.5% FCM, reduced the content of milk protein, reduced the yield of de novo milk FA, and increased the yields of mixed and preformed milk FA. In conclusion, our results indicate no reason for the restrictive use of change-over designs in CSPF supplementation studies or meta-analysis. Feeding CSPF increased NDF digestibility, tended to increase FA digestibility, and increased the yields of milk, milk fat, and 3.5% FCM. Additionally, CSPF increased milk fat yield by increasing the yields of mixed and preformed milk FA.
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of feed restriction on the carcass characteristics of castrated Canindé goat kids. A randomized block design was used, in which 21 goat kids with a body weight (BW) of 15.9±1.0kg were allocated to three levels of feed restriction: ad libitum, 20% and 40% restriction related to the ad libitum intake. The diet consisted of 55% forage (Tifton) and 45% concentrate. All animals were slaughtered when the kids fed ad libitum reached a BW of 25kg. After slaughter, the carcasses were chilled for 24 hours and subsequently measured. Kids fed ad libitum and subjected to 20% feed restriction showed similar morphometric carcass measurements, except for the chest circumference. Goat kids fed ad libitum exhibited greater values for warm and cold carcass yields compared with those subjected to 40% feed restriction and did not differ from the kids under 20% feed restriction. Weights of the commercial cuts showed decreasing mean values according to the intensity of feed restriction. Castrated Canindé goat kids subjected to 20% feed restriction presented similar carcass yields and proportion of commercial cuts to those fed ad libitum. RESUMO:Objetivou-se com o presente estudo avaliar os efeitos da restrição alimentar sobre as características de carcaça de cabritos Canindé castrados. Foi utilizado um delineamento em blocos casualizados, no qual 21 cabritos com peso corporal (PC) de 15,9±1,0kg foram distribuídos por três níveis de restrição alimentar: ad libitum, 20% e 40% de restrição alimentar. A dieta consistiu de 55% de volumoso (Tifton) e 45% de concentrado. Os animais foram abatidos quando os cabritos alimentados ad libitum atingiram PC de 25kg. Após o abate, as carcaças foram resfriadas por 24 horas e, subsequentemente, mensuradas. Os cabritos alimentados ad libitum e submetidos à restrição alimentar de 20% apresentaram medidas morfométricas semelhantes, exceto para a circunferência do peito. Os cabritos alimentados ad libitum apresentaram maiores valores para rendimento de carcaça quente e fria em comparação àqueles submetidos à restrição alimentar de 40% e não diferiram entre os cabritos com restrição alimentar de 20%. Os pesos dos cortes comerciais apresentaram médias decrescentes com a intensidade da restrição alimentar. Cabritos Canindé castrados submetidos à restrição alimentar de 20% obtém rendimento de carcaça e proporção dos cortes comerciais similares aos alimentados ad libitum. We evaluated the effects of abomasal infusion of emulsifiers on fatty acid (FA) digestibility and milk production of lactating dairy cows. All emulsifiers examined were polysorbates, nonionic surfactants, consisting of a polyethoxylated sorbitan esterified with FA. The polysorbates tested in this study consisted of the same polyethoxylated sorbitan base but differed by the FA esterified to it. Eight rumen-cannulated multiparous cows (89 ± 13 d in milk) were assigned to a treatment sequence in 4 × 4 Latin squares with 18-d periods consisting of 7 d of washout and 11 d of infusion. Treatments were abomasal infusions of water only (CON) or 30 g/d of different emulsifiers as follows: polysorbate-C16:0 (T40), polysorbate -C18: 0+C16: 0 (T60), and polysorbate-C18:1 (T80). Emulsifiers were dissolved in water and delivered at 6-h intervals (total daily infusion was divided into 4 equal infusions per day). Cows were fed the same diet that contained (% diet dry matter) 32.1% neutral detergent fiber, 15.7% crude protein, 25.8% starch, and 3.32% FA (including 1.92% FA from a saturated FA supplement containing 34.2% C16:0 and 47.7% C18:0). The T80 treatment increased total FA digestibility compared with CON (5.40 percentage units) and T60 (3.90 percentage units) and tended to increase it compared with T40. Also, T40 tended to increase and T80 increased (4.80 percentage units) 16-carbon FA digestibility compared with CON. The T80 treatment increased 18-carbon FA digestibility compared with the other treatments. The T40 treatment tended to increase and T80 increased total FA absorption compared with CON (53 g/d) and T60 (52 g/d). Both T40 and T80 increased the absorption of 16-carbon FA compared with CON and T60. The T60 treatment did not differ from CON for any digestibility variable. Both T40 and T80 increased the yields of milk fat, 3.5% fat-corrected milk, and de novo, mixed, and preformed milk FA compared with CON. In conclusion, not all emulsifiers increased FA digestibility. Compared with CON, T80 increased the digestibility and absorption of total, 16-, and 18-carbon FA. The T40 treatment tended to increase and T80 increased total FA absorption and the yields of milk fat and 3.5% FCM compared with CON. Milk fat yield was increased by increases in de novo, mixed, and preformed milk FA. In our short-term infusion study, results suggest that the predominant FA present in the polysorbate affects its ability to improve FA digestibility. Overall, FA digestibility and absorption were improved the most when cows received the T80 treatment.
