The 1996 Hewlett-Packard self-assessment procedure for product stewardship was established to help HP businesses advance their product stewardship programs. This was a two-step process that required each business to first, evaluate the significance of product stewardship the entity's business; and second, develop an action plan to meet the entity's current and emerging business needs in this area.To accomplish this task, the procedure was developed and implemented with a set of guiding principles aimed to maximize effectiveness for a diverse set of businesses, and allow flexibility in the procedures implementation to assure that the benefits provided value in each unique entity's needs. This paper documents the application of this procedure at two different HP entities, and the results and action plan these entities identified to improve their product stewardship programs.
