Background & Objectives: Understanding the distribution and prevalence of three major mosquito borne diseases in an area is critical for the development of effective vector control strategies and public health interventions. The present study is therefore aimed to explore the epidemiological trend of malaria, dengue and chikungunya from 2012 to 2018 in Punjab. Methods: Quantitatively retrospective data was collected from Department of Health and Family Welfare, the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP), Punjab from 2012 to March 2018. The collected data was statistically analysed. Results: In case of malaria highest prevalent districts in Punjab are Mansa and Bathinda, for dengue Patiala, Ludhiana and S.A.S. Nagar and Patiala for chikungunya. Malaria was reported mainly from rural areas while dengue and chikungunya were found more in urban areas. For all three mosquito borne diseases, males were infected more as compared to females. Malaria cases were reported in months of August and September while dengue cases increased from July to November whereas chikungunya cases were highest in months of August to October. Conclusions: These findings help in concluding the trend analysis which in turn helps us to increase our focus on disease endemic districts along with boosting the vector control strategies in respective districts. Further the control of these mosquito borne diseases can be solved by employing adequate human resources, by increasing awareness in the community by conducting health camps and strengthening the entomological surveillance for timely reduction in the breeding of the vectors, especially before the repeated rise in cases during the period from July to November each year.
Background: Diabetes Mellitus is an important health issue throughout the world. It is a common endocrine and metabolic disorder. Neuropathy is the most precocious and frequent late complication of diabetes mellitus. Evoked potentials offer the possibility to perform a functional evaluation of neural pathways in the central nervous system. Aims and Objectives: This study is a modest attempt to fi nd the relationship of central diabetic neuropathy with the disease, if any, by evaluating the brainstem auditory evoked potentials. Materials and Methods: Brainstem auditory evoked potentials were recorded in type-2 diabetic patients taken from OPD of Medicine department of Guru Nanak Dev Hospital, Amritsar. Patients were divided into three groups based upon the duration of disease. The parameters recorded were absolute latencies of waves I, III and V & Inter-peak latencies (IPL) I-III, I-V, III-V. Results: The results showed no statistically signifi cant changes in any of the above parameters. Discussion: This could be attributed to fairly good glycemic control of the patients included in the study. Thus, we conclude that patients with good glycemic control develop no auditory peripheral or central diabetic neuropathy irrespective of the duration of disease. However this study has its own limitations and further research is required to substantiate these results.
The control of phosphorus and calcium metabolism is one of the objectives in treatment protocol for CKD patients. The levels of these minerals in serum are affected by dietary patterns and nutritional status of the patients. India being a large country, diet patterns vary from one state to another. Thus, we suspect a close association between dietary intake and alterations in homeostasis of calcium and phosphorus in CKD patients. Therefore, we conduct this study to describe the effect of dietary factors and nutritional status on serum calcium and phosphorus levels in CKD patients on treatment in a tertiary care setting in North India. In the present study 330 CKD patients coming to dialysis unit, were recorded with detailed Medical history as well as baseline demographic data. Also, biochemical analysis of serum albumin corrected, calcium, phosphorus, and serum albumin of all cases were done using fully automated equipment. All statistical analyses were performed using SPSS statistical software, version 17. Majority (58.2 %) of the study patients were vegetarians with a mean value of BMI (Mean ± SD = 23.75 ± 4.70 kg/m2). A negative but significant correlation was found between corrected calcium and phosphorus with 0.05 level of confidence interval (r=-0.149, p= 0.007). It was found that the well-nourished patients were more likely to be hyperphosphatemic as compared to poorly nourished patients, but statistically the values were found to be non significant (Statistically p-value was not less than 0.05).
