This paper provides a preliminary study on the hysteresis compensation of a piezoresistive silicon-based polymer composite, poly(dimethylsiloxane) dispersed with carbon nanotubes (CNTs), to demonstrate its feasibility as a conductive composite (i.e., a force-sensitive resistor) for force sensors. In this study, the potential use of the nanotube/polydimethylsiloxane (CNT/PDMS) as a force sensor is evaluated for the first time. The experimental results show that the electrical resistance of the CNT/PDMS composite changes in response to sinusoidal loading and static compressive load. The compensated output based on the Duhem hysteresis model shows a linear relationship. This simple hysteresis model can compensate for the nonlinear frequency-dependent hysteresis phenomenon when a dynamic sinusoidal force input is applied.
This study presents the initial assessment for a new approach to frequency selectivity aimed at mimicking the function of the basilar membrane within the human cochlea. The term cochlea tonotopy refers to the passive frequency selectivity and a transformation from the acoustic wave into a frequency signal assisted by the hair cells in the organ of Corti. While high-frequency sound waves vibrate near the base of the cochlea (near the oval windows), low-frequency waves vibrate near the apex (at the maximum distance from the base), which suggests the existence of continuous frequency selectivity. Over the past few decades, frequency selectivity using artificial membranes has been utilized in acoustic transducers by mimicking cochlea tonotopy using cantilever-beam arrays with defined physical parameters such as length and thickness. Unlike the conventional cantilever-beam array type, the travelling wave propagation based-mechanoluminescence (ML) membrane made of ZnS:Cu- polydimethylsiloxane (ZnS:Cu-PDMS) composite that we describe here provides new frequency selectivity more similar to that demonstrated by the human membrane. Here, we explored the potential of the ML membrane to deliver new frequency selectivity by using a non-contact image sensor to measure visualized frequencies. We report that the ML basilar membrane can provide effective visualization of the distribution of strain rate associated with the position of maximal amplitude of the travelling wave.
We present a comprehensive introduction to the photorheological (PR) fluids whose rheological behavior can be changed by ultraviolet (UV) light with a wavelength of 365 nm. When the PR fluid was exposed to UV light, the viscosity of the fluid decreased, while the viscosity recovered to its initial value when UV light was turned off, indicating that the viscosity of these types of fluids can be reversible and tunable by UV light. Contrary to conventional smart fluids, such as electrorheological and magnetorheological fluids, PR fluid does not suffer from a phase splitting problem because it exists in a single-phase solution. Additionally, the PR fluid does not require any contact component, such as electrodes, and electric wires that are essential components for conventional smart fluids. In this work, the PR fluids were synthesized by doping lecithin/sodium deoxycholate reverse micelles with a photo-chromic spiropyran compound. It is demonstrated that the viscosity changes of PR fluids can be induced by UV light, and their rheological properties are examined in detail. In addition, an example of tailoring rheological properties using photoluminescence was introduced for improved response time. One of the potential applications, such as microfluidic flow control using the PR fluids, is also briefly presented.
This paper presents the result of a preliminary experimental study on the dynamic torsional response analysis of mechanoluminescent (ML) paint for potential development as a new type of non-contacting torque transducer. The torsional torque applied to a transmission shaft is measured by sensing the ML intensity emitting from an ML paint coating a transmission shaft. This study provides the fundamental knowledge for the development of new non-contacting torque sensing technology based on the ML intensity detection. The proposed measurement principle appears to offer potential applications in automotive torque measurement systems, even though the loading rate-dependent characteristics of the ML intensity needs to be examined further.
This research presents an introduction to non-contact tunable damping using a new class of photo-rheological fluids (PRFs) whose rheological behavior can be changed by using ultraviolet (UV) light. When the PRF is irradiated by UV light, its viscosity decreases; the viscosity recovers to its initial value when UV light is switched off, implying that the viscosity of PRF is reversible and tunable. We demonstrate that UV light can be used to induce the changes in the viscosity of PRFs, and that the proposed method can be successfully applied to realize non-contact tunable damping of vibrating structures. The additional advantages of PRF include no deposition associated with the single-phase solution of PRF and no electro-magnetic interference shielding.
