Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is a condition resulting from excessive drinking by pregnant women. Symptoms of FAS include abnormal facial features, stunted growth, intellectual deficits and attentional dysfunction. Many studies have investigated FAS, but its underlying mechanisms remain unknown. This study evaluated the relationship between alcohol exposure during the synaptogenesis period in postnatal mice and subsequent cognitive function in adult mice. We delivered two injections, separated by 2 h, of ethanol (3 g/kg, ethanol/saline, 20% v/v) to ICR mice on postnatal day 7. After 10 weeks, we conducted a behavioral test, sacrificed the animals, harvested brain tissue and analyzed hippocampal gene expression using a microarray. In ethanol-treated mice, there was a reduction in brain size and decreased neuronal cell number in the cortex, and also cognitive impairment. cDNA microarray results indicated that 1,548 genes showed a > 2-fold decrease in expression relative to control, whereas 974 genes showed a > 2-fold increase in expression relative to control. Many of these genes were related to signal transduction, synaptogenesis and cell membrane formation, which are highlighted in our findings.
In this paper we present a new method for interactive segmentation of a triangle mesh by using the concavity-sensitive harmonic field and anisotropic geodesic. The proposed method only requires a single vertex in a desired feature region, while most of existing methods need explicit information on segmentation boundary. From the user-clicked vertex, a candidate region which contains the desired feature region is defined and concavity-senstive harmonic field is constructed on the region by using appropriate boundary constraints. An initial isoline is chosen from the uniformly sampled isolines on the harmonic field and optimal points on the initial isoline are determined as interpolation points. Final segmentation boundary is then constructed by computing anisotropic geodesics passing through the interpolation points. In experimental results, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method by selecting several features in various 3D models.
We present a simple and effective method for the interactive segmentation of feature regions in a triangular mesh. From the user‐specified radius and click position, the candidate region that contains the desired feature region is defined as geodesic disc on a triangle mesh. A concavity‐aware harmonic field is then computed on the candidate region using the appropriate boundary constraints. An initial isoline is chosen by evaluating the uniformly sampled ones on the harmonic field based on the gradient magnitude. A set of feature points on the initial isoline is selected and the anisotropic geodesics passing through them are then determined as the final segmentation boundary, which is smooth and locally shortest. The experimental results show several segmentation results for various 3D models, revealing the effectiveness of the proposed method.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
