The fatigue prevalence in breast cancer survivors is high during the endocrine treatment. However, there are few evidence-based interventions to manage this symptom. The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of spore powder of Ganoderma lucidum for cancer-related fatigue in breast cancer patients undergoing endocrine therapy. Spore powder of Ganoderma lucidum is a kind of Basidiomycete which is a widely used traditional medicine in China. 48 breast cancer patients with cancer-related fatigue undergoing endocrine therapy were randomized into the experimental or control group. FACT-F, HADS, and EORTC QLQ-C30 questionnaires data were collected at baseline and 4 weeks after treatment. The concentrations of TNF-α, IL-6, and liver-kidney functions were measured before and after intervention. The experimental group showed statistically significant improvements in the domains of physical well-being and fatigue subscale after intervention. These patients also reported less anxiety and depression and better quality of life. Immune markers of CRF were significantly lower and no serious adverse effects occurred during the study. This pilot study suggests that spore powder of Ganoderma lucidum may have beneficial effects on cancer-related fatigue and quality of life in breast cancer patients undergoing endocrine therapy without any significant adverse effect.
Microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3B (LC3B) was involved in autophagosome formation and had been as a marker of autophagy which played an important role in the development of breast cancer. The purpose of this study was to explore the level of LC3B expression in four stages of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) and to evaluate the prognostic significance of LC3B expression in TNBC. The ultimate aim was to identify the new factor that could be useful in predicting clinical behavior of TNBC. We evaluated the expression level of LC3B protein in four kinds of TNBC tissue samples, including intraductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) without metastases, IDC with lymph node metastases (LNM), and IDC with distant metastases (DM). Hundred and four primary TNBC patients were involved in present study, and the expression level of LC3B protein was assessed by immunohistochemistry. Medical records of these patients were reviewed, and the clinicopathological analysis was performed. High expression of LC3B was observed in 7.7 % of DCIS (1 of 13 cases), 16.2 % of IDC (6 of 37 cases), 35.7 % of LNM (15 of 42 cases), and 58.3 % of DM (7 of 12 cases). LC3B high expression was significantly associated with tumor size (P = 0.028), lymph node metastasis (P = 0.002), and Ki-67 expression (P = 0.047). LC3B high expression patients showed poorer DFS and OS rates compared with LC3B low expression patients (P = 0.024, and P = 0.047, respectively). Multivariate analyses confirmed that high LC3B expression was an independent and significant factor for predicting the poor outcome of TNBC patients. These preliminary results demonstrated that high LC3B expression was associated with lymph node and distant metastasis. Furthermore, high LC3B protein expression was correlated with shorter survival in patients with triple-negative breast carcinoma. These findings provided preliminary evidence for the function of LC3B on the progression of TNBC and suggested LC3B was a useful marker in prognostic evaluation for patients with TNBC.
There are few studies examining the association between levels of physical activity and hypertension in middle-aged and older adults in China. Data were drawn from the Chinese Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (using four-stage stratified probability-proportional-to-size sampling), involving 7113 individuals aged 45 years and older from 28 provinces of China. Hypertension was defined as a systolic BP ≥ 130 mm Hg, or diastolic BP ≥ 80 mm Hg, or self-reported use of anti-hypertensive medications. The awareness, treatment, and control among hypertensive participants were 53.12%, 43.37%, and 10.03%, respectively. The prevalence of hypertension was 56.12% among all the participants, higher in main city zones (58.68%) than villages (55.52%) and other areas (55.78%, p < 0.0001). Participants who were overweight (BMI ≥ 24: AOR 4.08, 95% CI 3.21–5.20, P < 0.0001; BMI ≥ 28: 10.03, 7.56–13.31, P < 0.0001), and drinking more than once a month (1.28, 1.12–1.46, P < 0.0001) were more likely to have hypertension. The decision tree model was established to analyze the importance of different levels of physical activity on hypertension prevention. Participants who usually participated in moderate-to-vigorous activity for more than 10 minutes (vigorous: 0.82, 0.73–0.91, P = 0.0004; moderate: 0.83, 0.75–0.92, P = 0.0006) were less likely to have hypertension. The results of the decision tree showed that the vigorous physical activity seemed to be more important than moderate and light activity to induce beneficial effects on prevention of hypertension. The strength of our study is in using the decision tree to clearly rank the importance of those key factors affecting hypertension.
I present a literature survey of the currently available Doppler images of cool stars. The 65 individual stars with Doppler images consist of 29 single stars and 36 components in close binaries. Out of the total, 31 were observed only once but 12 stars are (or were) being monitored for years. Each image for each star is identified with the time when it was observed, whether photometry was used in the imaging, the inclination of the stellar rotation axis, the v sin i, the stellar rotation period, and whether a polar spot and/or a high‐latitude or low‐latitude spot was seen. The type of variable star and its M‐K spectral classification is also listed to identify the evolutionary status. The sample consists of 3 classical T Tauri stars, 8 weak‐lined T Tauri's, 27 main‐sequence stars, 9 subgiants, and 18 giants. The total number of Doppler images is 245 as of June 2002.
