International audienceNetwork and service operators nowadays use probes located in their networks in order to improve their knowledge on traffic evolution. The limited set of managed services like IPTV enable the use of well controlled rules for network dimensioning but this is not the case for public Internet originated traffic. Due to the growing success of services delivered by Internet players, a close attention given to customers' usage is mandatory to make accurate forecasts in order to avoid future network congestion. The present paper proposes a detailed analysis based on real Internet traffic captured on fixed (xDSL, FTTH) and mobile networks of Orange France and Telefónica operators. Internet traffic profile (traffic evolution over the time) for fixed and mobile networks is described. The paper discusses the relation between access technologies and traffic profiles. Additionally, it clarifies how both fixed and mobile residential customers access Internet services. This provides insight on the applications generating the major part of the traffic (i.e. video streaming, peer-to-peer, file downloading, etc.) and on the proportion of traffic generated by the "heavy users"
The ACCORDANCE OFDMA-PON architecture has been proposed as an attractive candidate for next generation PON networks. The benefits brought by this concept include ultra-high data rates, extensive node consolidation and convergence of multiple services within the same optical distribution network infrastructure, more flexible, two-dimensional bandwidth management, as well as the opportunity for cross-layer optimization. Moreover, OFDMA-PON is expected to scale better to increased (> 10 Gbps) aggregate data rates than existing TDMA-PONs. The ACCORDANCE project addresses a wide range of aspects related to OFDMA-PON. This includes architectural issues, physical layer OFDM transmission studies, OLT/ONU Tx/Rx system design, MAC protocol and algorithm design/implementation and wireless backhauling/fronthauling. This paper provides an overview of the activities within the ACCORDANCE consortium and the solutions selected by the project partners to address the aforementioned issues.
International audienceNowadays telecommunication operators which manage various network types are looking for convergence in different domains, from the access and aggregation to the core network. Moreover, in future 5G networks, the explosion of Internet of Things and the need of fixed and mobile convergence will imply strong requirements for more simplified and unified subscriber management. This will lead notably to seamless user experience when moving from a network to another. This paper proposes a pragmatic approach to operators for moving their networks smoothly to a really convergent subscriber data and session management system. It takes into account legacy mechanisms of subscriber management and introduces a universal Authentication, Authorization and Accounting (AAA) which aims at replacing progressively the legacy subscriber databases and helps in moving to a unified logical network element that will manage all subscriber's data and sessions. This paper illustrates the proposals with some use cases
