The transfer slab system is a structural system that transfers the loads from the upper shear wall structure to the lower columns. This is a costly system due to a very thick slab, and the relatively high cost can be mitigated by introducing voids in the slab. However, this system of flat plate containing voids is vulnerable to brittle failure caused by punching shear in vicinity of slab-column connection. Thus, the punching shear capacity of the void system is very important. However, the current code doesn't provide a clear design provision for the strength of slabs with a void section. In this study, experimental study was conducted to investigate the punching shear strength of the void slab system. The shear strength of the specimens was predicted by current code and previous researches. In result, the punching shear strength of the void system is determined as the least value calculated at critical section located a distance d/2 from the face of the column and the center of the void section using the effective area at critical section.
Long-term floor deflection caused by excessive construction load became a critical issue for the design of concrete slabs, as a flat plate is becoming popular for tall buildings. To estimate the concrete cracking and deflection of an early age slab, the construction load should be accurately evaluated. The magnitude of construction load acting on a slab is affected by various design parameters. Most of existing methods for estimating construction load addressed only the effects of the construction period per story, material properties of early age concrete, and the number of shored floors. In the present study, in addition to these parameter, the effects of shore stiffness and concrete cracking on construction load were numerically studied. Based on the result, a simplified method for estimating construction load was developed. In the proposed method, the calculation of construction load is divided to two steps: 1)Onset of concrete placement at a top slab. 2)Removal of shoring. At each step, the construction load increment is distributed to the floor slabs according to the ratio of slab stiffness to shore stiffness. The proposed method was compared with existing methods. In a companion paper, the proposed method will be verified by the comparison with the measurements of actual construction loads.
The structural designs of RC flat plates that have insufficient flexural stiffness due to lack of support from boundary beams may be governed by serviceability as well as a strength criteira. Specially, since overloading and tensile cracking in early-aged slabs significantly increase the deflection of a flat plate system under construction, a construction sequence and its impact on the slab deflections may be decisive factors in designs of flat plate systems. In this study, the procedure of calculating slab deflections considering construction sequences and concrete cracking effects is proposed. The construction steps and the construction loads are defined by the simplified method, and then the slab moments, elastic deflections, and the effective moment of inertia are calculated in each construction step. The elastic deflections in column and middle strips are magnified to inelastic deflections by the effective moment of inertia, and the center deflection of slab are calculated by the crossing beam method. The proposed method is verified by comparisons with the existing test result and the nonlinear analysis result. Also, by applications of the proposed method, the effects of the slab construction cycle and the number of shored floors on the deflections of flat plates under construction are analyzed.
The purpose of study is to investigate the load resistance mechanism of MRS continuous joint designed with different details. Six full-scale specimens, which could simulate the negative moment region of the 8 m long MRS system, were prepared to evaluate the structural performance of the continuous joint. According to the experimental results, all specimens which include the specimen with dapped ends designed by loads at the construction stage were failed in a flexural manner and showed the load carrying capacity over the nominal flexural strength. Therefore it is recommended that the dapped ends for MRS continuous joints be designed for the loads of the construction stage. And the shear key, which was installed on the top of rib for MRS slab, helps the enhancement of strength and especially deformation capacity.
