The growth and weight development of Leopard tortoise hatchings (Geochelone pardalis) kept at the Al Wabra Wildlife Preservation (AWWP), Qatar, was observed for more than four years, and compared to data in literature for free-ranging animals on body weight or carapace measurements. The results document a distinctively faster growth in the captive animals. Indications for the same phenomenon in other tortoise species (Galapagos giant tortoises, G. nigra; Spur-thighed tortoises, Testudo graeca; Desert tortoises, Gopherus agassizi) were found in the literature. The cause of the high growth rate most likely is the constant provision with highly digestible food of low fiber content. Increased growth rates are suspected to have negative consequences such as obesity, high mortality, gastrointestinal illnesses, renal diseases, "pyramiding," fibrous osteodystrophy or metabolic bone disease. The apparently widespread occurrence of high growth rates in intensively managed tortoises underlines how easily ectothermic animals can be oversupplemented with nutrients.
There is a debate whether supplemental feeding of deer bears the risk of inducing health problems, in particular acidosis. Here, the pH values of forestomach contents of free-ranging roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) shot in areas with and without supplemental winter feeding were compared. pH was similar in the dorsal and ventral rumen, but lower at these sites than in the Atrium ruminis, where it was again lower than in the reticulum; this pattern corresponds to expectations based on differences in the presence of saliva at the different sites of the forestomach. pH was lower with increasing time that elapsed between death of the animal and measuring pH in unsupplemented animals and was lower in unsupplemented animals in May/June than later in the year. Animals with supplemental winter feeding had significantly lower rumen pH (5.5) than animals without food supplementation (5.7). These data suggest that supplemental feeding of roe deer has the potential to lower forestomach pH. Although pH values measured in supplemented animals in this study would be considered indicative of rumen acidosis in domestic cattle, they are within the range previously measured in various free-ranging Odocoilid species, including roe deer; were of a similar magnitude as the May/June values of unsupplemented roe deer in this study; and must be considered with respect to potentially rapid declines in pH between death of the animal and pH measurement. Given methodological problems, analyses of literature data from free-ranging wild ruminants provide little evidence for a systematic variation of rumen pH with feeding type and body mass, but lead to the hypothesis that some New World cervids, including the roe deer, might either naturally have lower pH values than other ruminants or rumen contents whose pH drops rapidly after death.
Captive reptiles often show higher growth rates than in the wild, possibly due to higher feeding intensity. Although health problems are usually linked to inappropriate diets, fast growth itself, such as triggered by appropriate diets fed in high amounts, has traditionally also been considered unfavorable for tortoises. We document growth rates (based on age and mass) from private Testudo hermanni and T. graeca breeders, which are generally higher than those reported for free-ranging specimens, but show enormous variation. Tortoise patients presented to an exotics clinic also covered the whole growth rate spectrum. To test whether fast growth was associated with diseases, the age-body mass relationship of these patients was tested, in a retrospective evaluation, for additional influence factors, such as dietary history and occurrence of certain diet and growth-related diseases. No indication was found that animals particularly heavy for their age were more prone to diet/growth-related disorders. In general, tortoises fed diets with meat/grain were heavier for their age than tortoises fed more appropriate diets; dietary history was not related to a particular disease. The results suggest the age-body mass relationship may not be suitable for testing effects of fast growth; an age-body length relationship would be more appropriate. Animals presented for a diet/growth-related disorder were younger than animals presented for other reasons; there was a significant negative correlation between the severity of pyramiding and age, suggesting that growth-related disorders may well limit the life expectancy of tortoises. Controlled clinical studies are required to fully test this hypothesis.
A 2-month-old female goat was presented for depressed mental status and multifocal central neurologic signs 3 weeks after hot-iron disbudding. Conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings included a large intra axial mass in the left frontal lobe that was T2 hyperintense and T1 hypointense centrally with a contrast-enhancing peripheral capsule and perilesional T2 hyperintensity. A restrictive pattern was present in diffusion-weighted imaging. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy demonstrated an increased amount of succinate, acetate, amino acids, lipids; minimal amounts of lactate; and decreased amounts of N-acetyl aspartate and choline. A cerebral abscess due to Trueperella pyogenes was confirmed from necropsy and tissue culture.
