OBJECTIVE To evaluate the compliance with the assistance and the adhesion of nursing professionals for the safe administration of drugs in an Intensive Care Unit of a public hospital in Sergipe, Brazil. METHOD Quantitative, descriptive and cross-sectional study carried out by direct non-participant observation. Data collection performed in 2015. Non-probabilistic sample, for convenience, consisting in the observation of 557 doses of prepared and administered drugs. For data analysis, descriptive statistics were used for data analysis. RESULTS The items classified as safe care were: correct via (85.7%) and correct form (100%). The items classified as undesirable care were: correct patient (33.3%), correct medication (66.67%), correct dose (50%), correct register (33.33%), correct orientation (0%), and correct time (50%). CONCLUSION The practice was evaluated according to Carte's positivity index as undesirable care, considering that six of the eight items had low adhesion. The found weaknesses compromised the whole process of drug administration.
Objective: to assess the leadership of nurses of a maternity hospital according to the nursing aides and technicians and the 360-degree feedback method. Method: a descriptive, cross-sectional study. The population was 19 nurses and 96 nursing aides and assistants. Data were collected from May 2010 to July 2011 using a questionnaire based on the 360-degree method. Results: the nurses mentioned having a favourable performance in the four studied categories. The nursing aides and technicians disagreed with the recorded leadership performance of the nurses in the category "Communication" and "Support environment. " The responses for the category "Role Model" were favourable in all items, especially PAPEL18. In "Management Style", the highest favourable rating was 79% for GESTAO16. Conclusion: the categories "Communication" and "Support Environment" revealed a greater fragility of the nurses in comparison to the categories "Role Model" and "Management Style".
Objective:to evaluate the conformity of care practices of the nursing team during the administration of drugs through central vascular catheter. Method:a descriptive, prospective, observational study conducted in an Intensive Care Unit. The non-probabilistic intentional sample consisted of 3402 observations of drug administrations in patients with central vascular catheters. The previously validated collection instrument was constructed based on the Guideline for Prevention of Intravascular catheter-related infections. Data was collected through direct observations of nursing practices performed by the nursing team. The analysis used analytical, descriptive and inferential statistics (Chi-square test and Fisher’s exact test). Results:a total of 3402 procedures of drug administrations were observed. Female nursing technicians performed the highest number of actions. In none of the procedures did the professional perform all necessary actions. 0.2% of drug administrations were preceded by hand hygiene and 1.3% by disinfection of the multidose vial, ampoule or injectors. Conclusion:the practice evaluated was classified as undesirable. Failure to achieve the desired conformity was probably due to the low adherence of professionals to the practice of hand hygiene and disinfection of materials, injectors and connectors.
Method: quantitative, cross-sectional study, with a sample of 1397 observation opportunities of the five moments of hand hygiene at a cancer hospital. Data were collected by means of a form and analyzed using Graph Pad Prism 5.0. Results: the overall adherence rate was 29%, classified as undesirable or tolerable, with higher rates for nurses. There were no significant differences between adhesion and category (p<0.0001), as well as in the five moments (p<0.0001). The moment “after exposure to bodily fluids” showed higher rates, predominating the use of water/soap. Conclusion: adherence to hand hygiene was classified according to Carter’s index as tolerable, outside the recommendations advocated by the World Health Organization.
