Intraoral dental prosthesis can cause an unpleasant odor from the mouth, or halitosis. The discomfort of patients with dental prostheses and dental implant restorations increases due to halitosis. Therefore, preventing and reducing halitosis in patients with dental prostheses is necessary. This study reviews the literature on the causes and clinical treatments of halitosis associated with various types of dental prostheses, such as dental implants and removable dentures.
Botulinum toxin (BoNT), a potent neurotoxin that reversibly blocks presynaptic acetylcholine release, has been used successfully to treat sleep bruxism (SB) and chronic migraine (CM). However, studies investigating injection protocols such as drug dosage and injection site in the temporal muscle (TM) have rarely been reviewed. Therefore, recent studies involving the application of BoNT to the TM in patients with SB and CM was reviewed in this study.
