Infernão Lake, located within the Jataí Ecological Station in Luiz Ant nio Municipal district (São Paulo State, Brazil), is one of the most typical ox-bow lake of the Mogi-Guaçu River, and it presents, as the main feature, its great quantity of aquatic macrophytes, whose intensive development, in the last years practically covered the whole mirror of water. With the purpose to point out the composition and to establish the relative participation of the phytophilic zoocoenosis that inhabits the different macrophytes of that lake, a collection program of the main vegetation stands was established. The collections, were carried out randomly, during dry season (1994), in stands of Salvinia auriculata, Utricularia sp., Cabomba piauhyensis, Eichhornia azurea and Scirpus cubensis being used specific methodology for each vegetable type. The analysis of the different macrophytes showed the presence of 4,130 macroinvertebrates of 28 families, in which Chironomidae (Diptera) and Naididae (Oligochaeta) were the most representative, contributing on the average with 51% and 25% of the total fauna. Asheum, Beardius, Chironomus, Goeldichironomus, Parachironomus and Polypedilum were the most abundant Chironomidae genera. Species of the genus Dero (Dero) and D. (Aulophorus) represented the most typical Naididac of the phytofauna. With clear faunistic gradient from the shore to the center of the lake, the taxocoenosis indicated low similarity (PSc < 50%), evidencing its own characteristics of each biotope. On the contrary, there was a high similarity (PSc > 60%) among the associated communities on different vegetables, when grouped into feeding guilds, with expressive participation, in most of the macrophytes, of the collector-gatherers category, except on S. auriculata, whose predators (> 50%) and collector-filterers (> 20%) dominance turned that zoocoenosis distinct from the others.
Based on population data provided by the 2000 IBGE census, the volume of domestic sewage, the volume of treated sewage, the potential and remnant domestic sewage loads and the equivalent carbon and nitrogen loads were estimated for each one of the 645 counties of the São Paulo State and for the catchments of the rivers Piracicaba, MogiGuaçu, Turvo, Peixe, Aguapeí, São José dos Dourados, Itapetininga, Apiaí, Taquari, and Paranapanema. In order to estimate these parameters the existence of sewage collecting system, and the existence of any kind of sewage treatment in each county of the State were taken into account. Despite of the historical attempts of the São Paulo State government in treating sewage, only 17% of the sewage volume produced in the State has some type of treatment before it is launched to rivers. Consequently, the load of untreated sewage is indeed very large. This input of extra organic matter causes severe alterations in water bodies. Among the catchments we have analyzed the Piracicaba River basin is the most affected by domestic sewage, followed by Mogi-Guaçu and Turvo basins. Dentre as bacias hidrográficas acima citadas, a bacia do rio Piracicaba é a mais severamente afetada por despejos de esgoto doméstico, seguida pelas bacias dos rios Mogi e Turvo. Por outro lado, as bacias do Alto Paranapanema (Itapeteninga, Apiaí, Taquari e Paranapanema) são as menos afetadas.
Deforestation for agricultural purposes is the most dangerous human action against the conservation of the Brazilian Amazon Forest; its rates reached almost 20% of the original forested area. Many studies have been conducted on Chironomidae systematics and ecology over the Amazon biome, but most concerned the Central Amazon, while little is known about Chironomidae diversity and the effects of land development and agriculture intensification on the aquatic biota from Eastern Brazilian Amazon. The present study analyzed the effects of different land-use and land-cover on Chironomidae assemblages. Land-Use and Land-Cover (LULC) at the riparian zone were assessed from satellite imagery and three categories were defined: Forest, Secondary (Capoeira) and Agriculture. Ten catchments were selected: two for Forest, five for Agriculture and three for Secondary. For each catchment we characterized habitat and sampled insects. We hypothesized that i) the assemblage taxonomic richness will change across different land uses on riparian zones and ii) feeding functionality is a better information than taxonomic resolution to show the importance of LULC upon stream. A total of 20,884 individuals were sampled from the streams, abundance was higher in Agriculture streams. Corynoneura (18.4%), Pentaneura (14.6%) and Rheotanytarus (14.0%) were the most abundant genera in Agriculture streams; Corynoneura (17.8%), Caladomyia (13.6%), Paratanytarsus (13.1%) and Beardius (10.9%) dominated Forest streams; Goeldichironomus (25.9%), Rheotanytarus (17.6%) and Polypedilum (13.2%) dominated Capoeira streams. Regarding FFG, gatherers were the most numeric abundant in Forest (50.3%), followed by filterers (38.7%), predators (6.6%) and shredders (4.2%). In Capoeira, filterers were the main FFG (61.1%), gatherers (27.9%), predators (7.7%) and shredders (3.3%). In Agriculture streams, predators, filterers and gatherers had close numeric participation, 34.9%, 32.4% and 32.2%, respectively. Shredders performed a smaller fraction (0.4%). In Forest and Agriculture, scrapers participation was under 0.2%, while it was absent at Capoeira. Permutation tests showed significant differences among assemblages, based on numerical abundance of genera and on functional feeding group data. Even though, shredders showed a discrete participation in all three LULC, it was statistically significant higher at Forest streams when compared to Agriculture ones. Our study was able to demonstrate taxonomic differences of all LULC analyzed and it also showed the importance in considering the feeding behavior to understand the effects of land-use and land-covers changes.
Tanytarsus obiriciae, spec. nov., a new Tanytarsini from the Neotropics is described based on male and female adults, larvae and pupae. The larvae were found living associated with aquatic macrophytes in ponds and lakes from the Northern Region of São Paulo State, Brazil. Information on larval abundance dynamics and the adults' emergence periods is presented. Tanytarsus obiriciae, spec. nov., nova espécie de Tanytarsini da região Neotropical é descrita com base em todos os estágios, macho e fêmea adultos, pupa e larva. As larvas foram encontradas vivendo associadas a macrófitas aquáticas em lagoas e lagos da região norte do Estado de São Paulo, Brasil.
