As it is important to obtain accurate analytical result in an experimental research, this required quality control of the experimental system. Gamma spectrometry system can be used in a variety of different fields such as radiation and medical physics. In this paper the absolute efficiency, peak to valley ratio, and energy resolution of a3′′×3′′NaI(Tl) detector were determined experimentally for 511, 662, 835, 1173, 1275, and 1332 keV photon energies obtained from22Na,54Mn,60Co, and137Cs radioactive sources.
A radiation dose above the maximum permissible limit is very dangerous for human being. In radiation shielding, absorbent materials' properties must be well known. Heavyweight concrete is the most widely used in the world for this aim. The aggregate component of concrete plays an important role in improving concrete properties and this is effect of shielding properties of concrete. The thickness of any given material where 50% of the incident energy has been attenuated is known as the half-value layer. The half-value layer is expressed in units of distance (mm or cm). Like the attenuation coefficient, it is photon energy dependent. Increase of the penetrating energy of a stream of photons will result in an increase in a material's half-value layer. In this study, half-value layer thickness of concrete containing limonite, siderite and barite at different ratios was investigated; for this purpose measurements have been obtained by a collimated beam of gamma ray from sources 60 Co. The total linear attenuation coefficient (µ), half-value layer thickness is evaluated in this study.
The natural radioactivity existed since creation of the universe due to the long life time of some radionuclides. This natural radioactivity is caused byγ-radiation originating from the uranium and thorium series and40K. In this study, the gamma radiation has been measured to determine natural radioactivity of238U,232Th, and40K in collected sedimentary rock samples in different places of Turkey. The measurements have been performed usingγ-ray spectrometer containing NaI(Tl) detector and multichannel analyser (MCA). Absorbed dose rate (D), annual effective dose (AED), radium equivalent activities (Raeq), external hazard index (Hex), and internal hazard index (Hin) associated with the natural radionuclide were calculated to assess the radiation hazard of the natural radioactivity in the sedimentary rock samples. The average values of absorbed dose rate in air (D), annual effective dose (AED), radium equivalent activity (Raeq), external hazard index (Hex), and internal hazard index (Hin) were calculated and these were 45.425 nGy/h, 0.056 mSv/y, 99.014 Bq/kg, 0.267, and 0.361, respectively.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
