Palavras-chave: História da Educação -Goiás -Século XIX NEITHER SAILORS NOR MILITARY: NOTES ABOUT IZABEL OF DUMBAZINHOHIGH SCHOOL AND THE MILITARY LEARNERS COMPANY IN GOIÁSABSTRACT This present studyaims to understandthe reasons for thecreation oftwo institutions thatappear often in the provincial presidents' reports and in magazinesduring the second halfof the 19th centuryin Goias: Izabel of Dumbazinho High School and the Military Learners Company. An important fact to be noted is about the enrollment process, inmost cases, compulsory. Whyenrollment ratesin theseinstitutionswerecompulsoryin aprovince witha small number of schools? To answer this question, we studied the province presidents´reports andmagazines of that period. Thesedocumentswereanalyzed based on theassumption thatthe institutionalization ofpubliceducationin the 19th centuryaimed toincludepoorwith low income, black peopleand the mestizo population.Althoughthe target publicof these institutionswerequite different(Izabel High School-indigenousof the banks ofAraguaiariver andTocantins river; Military Learners Company-abandoned childrenfrom the provincial capital), their goalswere the same: to civilizeandto domesticatetheirinmates, and, for this, all ways of seeking "students" werevalid, including the "hunt".
