Vitamin K and chronically degenerative skeletal diseasesAmong other micronutrients, vitamin K plays an important role for bone health. Beside its role for the biological activity of several coagulation factors it is an essential factor for the bone matrix protein osteocalcin and other proteins (bone GLA proteins) of the bone metabolism. Dietary vitamin K is usually inadequate to maximize serum osteocalcin carboxylation and also subclinical vitamin K insufficiency may result in reduced activity of the bone matrix protein osteocalcin. Low vitamin K serum concentrations correlate with lower bone density and increased fracture risk. First intervention trials have shown a beneficial effect of vitamin K for bone health.
