Feline morbillivirus (FeMV) is a newly discovered paramyxovirus infecting domestic cats and its role in the pathogenesis of feline chronic kidney disease (CKD) has been suggested, however not confirmed. The primary aim of the study was to evaluate the renal damage associated with FeMV infection in cats. In this retrospective study, clinical and clinicopathological data were compared among 14 FeMV naturally infected, 21 CKD and 22 healthy cats. FeMV positive cats had serum chemistry analytes and main urine chemistry results similar to the healthy subjects. FeMV positive cats had significantly decreased urine specific gravity (median 1054, range 1022–1065) and urine creatinine (median 227.23 mg/dL, range 83.02–489.75) when compared with healthy cats (median 1067, range 1040–1080, p < 0.001; median 406.50 mg/dL, range 195.32–575.58; p < 0.001, respectively). Urine protein:creatinine ratio (UPC) results of FeMV and CKD were not different (median 0.20, range 0.08–1.03; median 0.23, range 0.10–0.80, respectively), however UPC results were significantly increased in both groups, if compared with healthy cats (median 0.1, range 0.04–0.250, p < 0.01). Based on clinical data, serum creatinine concentration, urine specific gravity and UPC results, CKD was suspected by clinicians in 3/14 FeMV cats. Urine protein sodium-dodecyl-sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) in 10/13 (77%) FeMV cats indicated a tubular pattern, with a decrease of uromodulin and an increase in the number and intensity of low molecular weight proteins. FeMV infection can be associated with different grades of renal dysfunction ranging from mild tubular proteinuria with less concentrated urine to azotemia in cats younger than those typically affected by CKD.
Heinz bodies (HBs) are known to interfere with automated hematology in cats, particularly with the white blood cell (WBC) count. We evaluated the influence of feline HBs on the complete blood count (CBC) results obtained using a flow cytometry–based analyzer. We retrospectively selected cats with circulating HBs and reviewed the results of their CBCs, including red blood cell (RBC) indices, basophil/lobularity (Baso) WBC count (WBCB), peroxidase (Perox) WBC count (WBCP), and cytograms. Based on the presence or absence of HB-related artifacts in their Baso cytogram, cats were grouped into Baso-HBs and HBs groups, respectively, for comparison. The WBCB and WBCP were compared to manual counts of WBCs carried out on blood smears at 400× (MC-WBC). We included 32 cats in our study: 9 of 32 were in the Baso-HBs group, and 23 of 32 were in the HBs group. Baso-HBs cats had a significantly increased HB percentage ( p < 0.001), WBCB ( p < 0.001), difference between WBCB and WBCP ( p < 0.001), lymphocyte count ( p < 0.001), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration ( p < 0.001), and difference between calculated and measured erythrocyte hemoglobin concentrations ( p < 0.001) compared to HBs cats. In Baso-HBs cats, the WBCB was significantly higher than the WBCP ( p = 0.02); no significant difference was detected between the WBCP and the MC-WBC ( p = 0.88). Evaluation of automated CBC results raised the suspicion of HB-related interference when using a hematology analyzer in cats; hence, blood smear examination remains essential in routine practice.
Acne (acne vulgaris) is a chronic, widespread, multifactorial disease manifested by open and closed comedones, inflammatory skin lesions in the form of papules, pustules and nodes. Emotional reactions are the most characteristic manifestations of human mental activity, which are accompanied by autonomic and endocrine changes associated with the release of various hormones: primarily stress hormones and androgens. Antibiotics have been effective and widely used for the past four decades. However, worldwide, there is an increase in antibiotic resistance due to their frequent and prolonged use. Retinoids are currently one of the most effective groups of drugs used to treat acne. The aim of our study is to investigate the efficacy of the first generation retinoids (isotretinoin) in the treatment of third and fourth degree acne in order to improve emotional status of patients. Patients received Isotretinoin in a starting dose of 0.5 mg / kg of body weight during meals, dose adjustment was carried out after 1 month at the rate of 0.5-0.75 1.0 mg / kg of body weight, the duration of treatment was assessed by gaining the commutative dose of 120 mg / kg of body weight, and the treatment duration lasted 16-24 weeks. After 3 months, the majority of patients 26 (89.66%) noted the disappearance of the rash completely, and 3 (10.34%) found only single papular-pustular elements. At the end of the therapy course with isotretinoin, complete clinical remission was achieved in all patients and the emotional load completely disappeared, self-esteem increased, disbelief in a positive result faded in 25 (96.15%) of 26 patients in the "Depressive" category.
1,2-O-dilauryl-rac-glycero glutaric acid-(6′-methylresorufin) ester (DGGR) lipase activity has been proposed as a faster and less expensive test used in the diagnosis of acute pancreatitis (AP) compared to canine pancreatic lipase immunoreactivity (cPLI), which is considered the most sensitive and specific serum test available for dogs. Elevations in lipase activity have been observed in dogs with naturally occurring hypercortisolism (HC) and in those treated with exogenous steroids, which complicates the diagnosis of AP in dogs with HC. We compared lipase activity measured by DGGR and 1,2-diglyceride (1,2-DiG) assays in 22 dogs with HC, 22 with AP, and 22 healthy dogs. The dogs with HC had no clinical signs or ultrasonographic findings consistent with AP. DGGR lipase activity was elevated in 64% and 73% of the dogs with HC and AP, respectively, and in 18% of healthy dogs. 1,2-DiG lipase activity was high in 23% and 36% of the dogs with HC and AP, respectively, and in 5% of the healthy dogs. Both DGGR and 1,2-DiG lipase activities were significantly different between the healthy dogs and the other 2 groups, whereas no differences were detected between the dogs with HC and those with AP. Our results support a lack of specificity for both DGGR and 1,2-DiG lipase activity assays in aiding the diagnosis of AP in dogs with HC.
Large amount of nitric oxide (NO) can be released in patients with sepsis. Methemoglobin is formed from the interaction between NO and hemoglobin. Mild methemoglobinemia reflecting NO overproduction has been reported in septic people, and occasionally associated to septic shock and organ dysfunction. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate circulating methemoglobin fraction in dogs with sepsis and to assess its prognostic value. Methemoglobin reference interval (RI) was calculated in 41 healthy dogs and was set at 0-2.2%. A total of 131 dogs with sepsis were included in the study; 24/131 had a circulating methemoglobin ≥2.2%. The median methemoglobin fraction was significantly higher in dogs with sepsis compared to healthy ones (1.7%, 0.4-3.5% vs. 1.0, 0.3-2.2%, P = 0.0005). No significant difference was observed between dogs with uncomplicated sepsis (n = 98) vs. dogs with septic shock (n = 33) (1.8%, 0.4-2.8% vs. 1.5%, 0.4-3.5%, P = 0.74), between dogs with and without multi-organ dysfunction (n = 38 and n = 93, respectively) (1.7%, 0.4-3.5% vs. 1.7%, 0.5-2.8%, P = 0.27), and between survivors (n = 77) vs. non survivors (n = 54) (1.5%, 0.4-2.8% vs. 1.8%, 0.4-3.5%, P = 0.05). Dogs with methemoglobin fraction above or equal to the upper limit of the RI had a significantly higher frequency of death compared to dogs with methemoglobin levels <2.2% (60.0% vs. 36.8%, P = 0.04). In conclusion, mild methemoglobinemia is detected in dogs with sepsis, and methemoglobin values above the RI might be associated with a worse outcome.
