Modern humans exhibit increasing relative enamel thickness from M1 to M3. Some biomechanical (basic lever) models predict that the more distal molars in humans encounter higher occlusal forces, and it has been postulated that this provides a functional explanation for the observed gradient in relative enamel thickness. However, constrained three‐dimensional models and experimental observations suggest that there is a reduction in bite force potential from M1 to M3, which would be consistent with the tendency for humans to reduce the size of the distal molars. In this regard, it has been postulated that the distal increase in enamel thickness is a consequence of crown size reduction; thus, it is unnecessary to invoke functional scenarios to explain this phenomenon. We assess these competing proposals by examining relative enamel thickness in a catarrhine primate (Papio ursinus) that exhibits crown size increase from M1 to M3. The molar row of P. ursinus is positioned relatively far forward of the temporomandibular joint, which results in the baboon being able to exert relatively greater muscle forces during posterior biting in comparison to modern humans. Thus, a significant distalward gradient of increasing enamel thickness would be expected in P. ursinus according to the hypothesis that posits it to be functionally related to bite force. The present study reveals no significant difference in relative enamel thickness along the molar row in P. ursinus. This finding lends support to the notion that the relatively thicker enamel of human distal molars is related primarily to their reduction in size. This carries potential implications for the interpretation of enamel thickness in phylogenetic reconstructions: the relatively thick molar enamel shared by modern humans and some of our fossil relatives may not be strictly homologous, in that it may result from different underlying developmental mechanisms. Analysis of fecal progestogen profiles during Depo-Provera injection (1,200 mg; DEPO, Pfizer Inc., New York, NY), melengestrol acetate (MGA) in feed (2 or 3 mg/head/day), and a combination treatment (DEPO+MGA) are presented for nine captive female Nile hippos housed at Disney's Animal Kingdom in Florida. All tested treatments reduced fecal progestogen elevations successfully to durations consistent with prevention of ovulation for a portion of the treatment period. Percentage of treatment months with suppression of luteal phases indicative of ovulation was maximal for high-dose MGA (91.7+/-13.9%) and DEPO+MGA (91.7+/-20.4%), followed by DEPO injection alone (69.2+/-13.9%) and low-dose MGA (57.6+/-33.2%). Both 1,200 mg DEPO and low-dose MGA (2.0 mg/day) treatments were insufficient to prevent an apparent seasonal breakthrough of ovarian activity from June-August 2002. Although luteal phases were observed, no females conceived during those months. Overall, in 133.5 treatment months with females housed with an adult male, one female conceived during the transition period between treatments. After cessation of contraceptive treatment, average latency to first normal ovarian cycle was 80.6+/-19.5 days (range = 22-179 days). Up to 12 months post-treatment, however, successive cycles were often irregular with evidence of short periods of anovulation and shortened luteal phases in all females monitored. American eels Anguilla rostrata, collected from three distinct locations along the St Lawrence River (Lake St Lawrence, Quebec City and Kamouraska), were thought to consist entirely of out-migrating adults at Quebec City and Kamouraska and of both resident and migrants at Lake St Lawrence. The mean plasma levels of 17 -oestradiol closely paralleled the trend observed with gonadosomatic index (I G ) and oocyte development. The highest levels of 17 -oestradiol and I G were observed in Quebec City and Kamouraska, while the levels observed in the resident eels from Lake St Lawrence were very low. Generally, the concentration of total plasma non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) appeared to follow the trend of 17 -oestradiol and I G and increased with sexual maturity. However, the most sexually mature group, eels from Kamouraska, had the lowest total plasma NEFA levels. The reason for the drop is not clear at present. In addition, a number of shifts in the plasma NEFA profiles of American eels did occur during their migration in a downstream direction, with several fatty acids either increasing or decreasing in relative abundance. The ratio of n3 : n6 fatty acids declined with increasing sexual maturity as most n3 fatty acids became less abundant. Although the correlation between gonadal development and the relative concentration of individual fatty acids was not always clear, both arachidonic acid (20 : 4n6) and docosahexaenoic acid (22 : 6n3) were significantly higher in the plasma of out-migrating adults than in resident yellow phase eels. 2001 The Fisheries Society of the British Isles
