Speaking skills can be considered a key measure of success in learning a language. Learning Tamil, as an elective language in Malaysian National Primary schools, is extremely difficult for beginners compared to students in National Type Tamil Primary Schools in Malaysia. The aim of the research is to apply digital storytelling as a pedagogical approach in speaking classes in national primary schools with a view to promote Tamil speaking abilities of children. A collaborative quasi-experimental action research design was adopted to measure the efficacy of digital storytelling in enhancing students’ Tamil speaking skills. Action research was conducted with thirteen 2nd standard students aged between 7 and 8 years old, in a national primary school, in Pasir Gudang district, Johor, on a pilot project. The Tamil digital storytelling modules were developed in a mobile application with pre-and post-test survey tools and the respective class teachers were trained on the module to work with children in a regular classroom setting. The results showed that significant improvements were observed in students' comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency elements of the speaking skills after their participation in the digital storytelling sessions. As a result, the study suggests that digital storytelling may be an effective pedagogical approach to enhance students’ speaking abilities in the classroom and beyond to improve the students’ mother-tongue as second-language learning in schools.
At an early age, moral cultivation starts. If the child is in an area where, because of many factors, there is only a father or mother, this can affect the physical and psychological preparation of the child. The role of single parents in the development of children can be an obstacle to promoting child development, especially moral development. The value of training in self-efficacy for single-parents in stimulating moral growth is, therefore, an alternative option for children. This research aimed to examine the effectiveness of the Parental Self-Efficacy Program in improving the morality of children with single-parent status. This study explores one form of effort or experimental research to affect improvement. In order to determine the effectiveness of the parental self-efficacy program to promote the moral and social-emotional growth of children with single-parent status, a pre-test-post-test nonequivalent comparison group quasi-experimental design was chosen. Data were obtained from two community samples of 30 parents (mother) with single-parent families and 30 normal parent family status with children between preschool children aged 4 to 6 years. The findings showed that the parental self-efficacy program had an impact on improving the moral growth of children with single-parent status. It can be seen from the major differences linked to parental self-efficacy and the moral growth of children between the control group and the experimental group, where the experimental group had a higher average.
The research aims to delve into the KaniMani Storytelling Mobile Application (KM-SMA)’s impact on Tamil students’ speaking skills and motivation to learn Tamil through the use of mobile applications. Thirty-six Tamil students aged between 7 and 8 years old were chosen based on their performance on a Classroom Assessment (CA) and randomly assigned to one of two groups (one experimental and one control) of 18 participants each. All the students were from three national primary schools, in the Pasir Gudang district, Johor, Malaysia. Two instruments were employed to examine the speaking skills of the participants before and after the experiment: speaking tests as pre-post tests and a motivation questionnaire. In addition, paired t-test was employed to examine the data. We found that following treatment, KM-SMA participants performed better than the control group regarding motivation and speaking skills. The results showed the importance of language instruction through mobile applications; it is a crucial element and we advised that it be considered in the Tamil language curriculum.
