Abstract. Rangga KK, Yonariza, Yanfika H, Mutolib A. 2020. Perception, attitude, and motive of local community towards forest conversion to plantation in Dharmasraya District, West Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 4903-4910. Forest conversion in Dharmasraya District massively occurred from 2000 to 2014. In 2000, forest area reached 86% of 33,550 ha. In 2014, forest cover reduced to only 16% with an increase in plantation area (rubber and oil palm), covering 59% of the total area. This study was aimed to examine the perception, attitude, and motive of the local community regarding forest conversion to the plantation. This study was located in PFMU (Production Forest Management Unit) Dharmasraya West Sumatra, which included a production forest area. This study was conducted from February to August 2018 with a case study approach. A total of 40 households, was selected as respondents. Snowball sampling was applied to interview the key informants. Data were analyzed using the interactive model, which included data reduction, data presentation, also conclusion drawing and verification. The study result indicated that forest is owned by the local community based upon the customary law, and the state does not have the right to manage and claim forest ownership. In terms of the economic aspect, the community benefited greatly from wood availability in the forest as the source of income. According to the local community, the conversion of forests into plantation did not have a significant effect on the environment. In fact, the local community agreed that land-use change from forest to plantation will provide greater benefit than preserving the forest. The expansion of plantation was found to be the motive for land clearance by cutting trees to obtain ownership over the forest.

The research was conducted in Enggalrejo Villages from April to May 2018. The research location was chosen purposively since both villages are agricultural centers of the regency. The method used a qualitative research approach. The data was collected through in-depth interviews from 3 key informants consisting of agricultural extension staff and 30 farmers. Key informants were identified using snowball sampling. This research applied KAP (Knowledge, Attitude, Practice) approach with three classifications namely low, medium, and high. The results showed that the staff knowledge, attitude, and practice of agricultural extension related to climate change and its relation to agriculture was low. It was also found that farmers have been aware of climate change due to rainfall uncertainty and adjusted it through changing/shifting the cropping period. Farmers agree that climate change affects agriculture. The response of farmers to climate change: shortage varieties, farming without tillage, early harvesting period, use of herbicides to accelerate weeding, and diversification of agricultural commodities as the adaptation strategy.

The Community-Based Livelihood Improvement Programme (PPMK) implemented with the help of Self-Help Groups (SHG) is expected to improve the livelihoods of poor people. This study aims to analyse: 1) the effectiveness of SHG in the implementation of PPMK programmes, 2) food security of SHG member households, and 3) the relationship between the effectiveness of PPMK programme implementation and SHG member food security. The study was conducted at Margodadi Village, Metro City in October-December 2018. The research method used involved a survey with a quantitative approach with saturation sampling techniques. Respondents were 25 SHG members who were recipients of aid under the PPMK programme. A descriptive analysis method was used to answer the first and second objectives, while the non-parametric statistic of Spearman's Rank correlations was used to answer the third objective. The results showed that: 1) SHG members were effective in implementing the PPMK programme with a rating in the "good" category, with all the overall programme objectives being achieved, helping to increase the income of SHG member households, strengthening SHG's institutional capacity and the ability of SHG members to expand their business; 2) the food security level of the majority of SHG member households in Margodadi Village was both objectively and subjectively in high category; and 3) the effectiveness of SHG in the PPMK was significantly different from the level of household food security.
