The aims of this study were: (a) to evaluate the resistance of coffee cultivars to Pseudomonas syringae (PS); (b) verify if there are coffee genotypes that present less wounds on the leaves; (c) to study the correlation between amount of wounds and PS severity. The field trial was installed in April 2014 at the IAPAR’s experimental station (Londrina, Paraná, Brazil). 18 Arabica coffee cultivars were evaluated. The cultivars Mundo Novo IAC 376-4 and Catuaí Vermelho IAC 81 were the susceptible controls and IPR 102 was the resistant control. After 32 months of planting the field trial, resistance to PS was evaluated in December 2016. The evaluation of the PS severity was carried out under conditions of natural infections of P. syringae pv. garcae and P. syringae pv. tabaci based on the symptoms, using a grading scale from 1 to 5. The number of wounds on the leaves of the eight cultivars were counted. The results showed that IPR 102 was resistant to Pseudomonas syringae, whereas IPR 99, Arara, IPR 107, Acauã, Sabiá, Catucaiam 24137, Japy and Catuaí Vermelho IAC 81 were susceptible. Mundo Novo and Catucaí Amarelo 2SL were more susceptible than Catuaí Vermelho. IPR 106, Japiam, Catiguá MG 2, Catiguá MG 1 and IBC Palma 2 showed moderate resistance, while IPR 103 and Catucaiam 2015479 were moderately susceptible. The cultivars IPR 102 and IPR 106 presented resistance to wounding because they had lower wounds than other cultivars. Increased leaf wounds was associated with increased P. syringae severity.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the resistance of Ethiopian Coffea arabica from IAPAR’s germplasm bank to Meloidogyne paranaensis. Two experiments were carried out in a greenhouse in IAPAR, Londrina, Paraná State, Brazil. A completely randomized design was used with 15 treatments, eight replications and one plant per plot. 14 accessions of C. arabica from Ethiopia were evaluated and the cultivar Mundo Novo IAC 376-4 was used as a susceptible control. Seedlings with three to four pairs of leaves were transplanted into plastic cups with a capacity of 700 mL and 1200 eggs and/or J2 of M. paranaensis (IP) were inoculated after one month. The evaluations were performed 130 days after inoculation, when the data of the number of eggs and J2 per gram of roots, the final population of nematodes (FP) were obtained and the reproduction factor (RF) was calculated using the formula: RF = IP / FP. To classify the resistance levels of the genotypes, the reduction of the reproduction factor (RRF) was used. The Ethiopian accessions were classified from highly resistant to highly susceptible. Most of the Ethiopian coffees were highly resistant to M. paranaensis. The genotype Geisha also showed resistance, but is still in heterozygous condition.
The aim of this study was to prove that Híbrido de Timor (HdT) accessions are resistance sources to Meloidogyne paranaensis. Two experiments were carried out in a greenhouse at IDR-Paraná (Londrina, Paraná State, Brazil). Open pollinated fruits were harvested from 10 accessions (HdT UFV 380-05, HdT UFV 408-10, HdT UFV 408-11, HdT UFV 408-28, HdT UFV 428-04, HdT UFV 439-14, HdT UFV 443-08, HdT UFV 445-70, HdT UFV 446-138, HdT UFV 448-75) from the EPAMIG/ UFV germplasm bank. Seeds of these accessions were sown to obtain seedlings to test the resistance to M. paranaensis. For each experiment, a completely randomized design was used with 11 treatments, eight replications and one plant per plot. Cultivar Mundo Novo IAC 376-4 was the susceptible check. Seedlings with three to four pairs of leaves were transplanted into plastic cups with a capacity of 700 mL and 1200 eggs. The J2 of M. paranaensis (IP) were inoculated after one month. The assessments were performed 134 days after inoculation, when the data of the number of eggs and J2 per gram of roots and the final population of nematodes (FP) were obtained. The reproduction factor (RF) was calculated using the formula: RF = IP / FP. To classify the resistance levels of the genotypes, the reproduction factor reduction (RFR) was used. It classified the levels from highly resistant to highly susceptible. Different levels of intermediate resistance between the accesses were observed, highlighting HdT UFV 408-28 that presented moderate resistance to M. paranaensis. HdT UFV 408-28 showed a high percentage of plants with intermediate resistance, which can be used in breeding programs aimed at resistance to M. paranaensis
