High strength concrete (HSC) characterized by high compressive strength but lower ductility compared to normal strength concrete. This low ductility limits the benefit of using HSC in building safe structures. Nanomaterials have gained increased attention because of their improvement of mechanical properties of concrete. In this paper we present an experimental study of the flexural behavior of reinforced beams composed of high-strength concrete and nanomaterials. Eight simply supported rectangular beams were fabricated with identical geometries and reinforcements, and then tested under two third-point loads. The study investigated the concrete compressive strength (50 and 75 N/mm2) as a function of the type of nanomaterial (nanosilica, nanotitanium and nanosilica/nanotitanium hybrid) and the nanomaterial concentration (0%, 0.5% and 1.0%). The experimental results showed that nano particles can be very effective in improving compressive and tensile strength of HSC, nanotitanium is more effective than nanosilica in compressive strength. Also, binary usage of hybrid mixture (nanosilica + nanotitanium) had a remarkable improvement appearing in compressive and tensile strength than using the same percentage of single type of nanomaterials used separately. The reduction in flexural ductility due to the use of higher strength concrete can be compensated by adding nanomaterials. The percentage of concentration, concrete grade and the type of nanomaterials, could predominantly affect the flexural behavior of HSRC beams.
The behavior of unbounded post tension and reinforced concrete beams under elevated temperature was presented. The experimental work was consisted of two major phases. In the first phase, the objective was studying the mechanical performance of prestressed beam, prestressed beam with steel addition and reinforced concrete beams respectively were studied. In the second phase, the residual mechanical performance of prestressed beam, prestressed beam with steel addition and reinforced concrete beams under elevated 400oC, for 120 minutes durations. The failure mechanisms, ultimate load capacity, and deflection at critical sections were monitored. The numerical prediction of the flexural behavior of the tested specimens is presented in this paper. This includes a comparison between the numerical and experimental test results according to ANSYS models. The results indicate that the prestressed beam with steel addition and reinforced concrete beams had higher resistance to beams under elevated 400oC than that of prestressed concrete beam in terms of ultimate capacity. It is also shown that the reinforced concrete beams have higher resistance to beams under elevated temperature than that of prestressed beam, prestressed beam with steel addition.
Composite columns are generally installed in high-rise buildings and bridges. As well as being smaller and lighter than conventional reinforced concrete columns, composite columns offer high efficiency and ductility. In this research, experimental and analytical studies were carried out to investigate the optimal distribution of the total steel area of the Concrete-Filled Hollow Steel Tube (CFHST) columns; the experimental program included 20 CFHST columns. The main variables of the experimental study were the distribution of the total steel cross-sectional area over the internal concrete core (steel reinforcement) and the external steel tube, the cross-sectional shape, the width-to-breadth ratio t/b, and the presence or absence of shear connectors. In addition, using equations of different codes, comparison was conducted between the experimental and analytical results. For a constant steel cross-sectional area, the use of internal steel bars and external steel tubes, together with the use of shear connectors, was found to exhibit a better ultimate load capacity, stiffness, and ductility for the CFHST columns.
