ABSTRACT:Integrative review which goal was to identify the scientific production published about the use of music in the care in health of children and adolescents with cancer from 2004 to 2014. The search was conducted in SciELO, LILACS, BDENF, MEDLINE, PubMed and The Cochrane Library databases. Seven studies were selected, which showed positive effects in the use of the music such as decrease of pain, anxiety, depression and showed that the music can bring benefits to the patient and their families. Two categories were defined on the use and effects of music and the patients' perspective, parents and professionals about this practice were elaborated. It was concluded that the use of music as a complementary therapy can improve child and adolescent's physical and mental well-being in face of serious illness and its treatment, and helps to strengthen the bond between the patient and his family, as well as the health care team. The case study method can be used by nurses and contribute to the advancement in knowledge of nursing as a science and therefore contribute to a full care practice in the context in which the phenomenon happens.
Objective: This study's aim has been to identify the coping strategies used by nurses in pediatric oncology in face of the patient's death. Methods: This integrative review was carried out using the following databases: VHL, MEDLINE/PubMed, and Google Scholar, from April 1 st to May 3 rd, 2017. The following descriptors were used: death, nursing, child, health pediatrics, oncology, cancer, and coping. The final sample consisted of ten scientific papers. Results: The following coping strategies identified: psychological support from other professionals and from the institution; institutional training on death and the dying process; exchange of experiences among professionals; sports practice; and religion and faith. These strategies were carried out according to individual characteristics and the work environment. Conclusion: It was concluded that the strategies lead to supportive attitudes according to the needs of professionals, alleviating their suffering and improving their care process.
This study aims at the identification of strategies used for pain management in children and teenagers during the hematopoietic stem cells post-transplant period. An integrative review of literature was employed as methodology for this work, using as sources of information the following databases: MEDLINE, LILACS, SCIELO, BDENF, SCOPUS, Web of Science and CAPES periodic portal. The terms used for searching were: pain, pain management, pain pediatric, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, bone marrow transplantation; and the acronyms BMT and HSCT. The final sample comprised seven articles, based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The identified strategies for pain management in the studies were: patient-controlled analgesia, caregiver-controlled analgesia; complementary therapies such as: aromatherapy, extra-oral phototherapy with infrared diodes, heat application, cryotherapy, music, games, massage; and results indicators, in order to monitor the pain management effectiveness. As a conclusion, the most effective strategies were: patient or caregiver-controlled analgesia, and the results indicators that allowed pain management in adequate time. Nevertheless, it is important to highlight that other studies are necessary to evaluate the effectiveness of the complementary strategies employed.
Objectives: to identify publications about the applicability of the Symptom Management Theory in nursing care to pediatric, adolescent, adult and elderly patients. Methods: scoping review following the steps: definition of the objective, research question and inclusion criteria; search, selection and analysis of publications; synthesis of results. The search occurred in the VHL, SciELO, CAPES and PubMed Journals Portal bases, contemplating publications between 1994 and July 2020. Results: out of 3,286 studies, ten were selected, published between 2008 and 2019. They described the relationships between the participants and the domains (person, environment, health and disease), components (symptom experience, management strategies, results) and presented strategies for symptom management. Conclusions: the Symptom Management Theory was considered applicable to the participants of the studies and to nursing care. It was concluded that understanding the interaction of these elements is essential to plan actions aimed at controlling symptoms effectively.
