This research investigated the impact of microfinance on Micro and Small Enterprise (MSE) in Ogun State, Nigeria. There were two research problems. First, it was whether microfinance bank (financial intermediation services) assists MSEs in Ogun State, Nigeria. Second, it was whether microfinance banks assist MSEs in improving the volume of trade they engaged in Ogun State, Nigeria. The purposive and stratified sampling method was used. The survey obtained 408 respondents in MSEs in Ogun State. The research problems were tested with simple regression analysis. Findings from the first problem show that there is a negative relationship between intermediary financial services (credit disbursement) and MSEs. The second finding also shows there is a positive relationship between microcredit and business expansion. The research concludes that businesses that access microcredit have grown averagely regarding business expansion. Therefore, it is recommended that microfinance banks should increase the size of loan and interest charged to MSEs, so they have enough funds to finance their operations. The researchers further recommend that government should review the activities of microfinance institutions.
Aim/purpose-Financial inclusion is a catalyst for achieving sustainable development. This study attempts to evaluate impact of financial inclusion on sustainable development. Design/methodology/approach-Both Error Correction Model (ECM) and Fully Modified Ordinary Least Square (FMOLS) were used to ascertain the short-run and long-run relationship respectively among the variables which covers the period from 2001 to 2016, as data for HDI (Human Development Index) were available for Nigeria from 2001 through 2016 only. Findings-The result of the analysis indicated that in the short-run there is short-run causality running from a number of commercial bank branches, demand deposit from the rural areas, loan to rural areas to HDI. The long-run result revealed that the explanatory variables consisting of loan to rural areas, number of commercial bank branches and demand deposit from the rural areas all have positive significant impact on HDI in Nigeria. The overall result revealed that financial inclusion has impact on sustainable development in Nigeria. Research implications/limitations-The study recommends that banks and monetary authorities should develop new product and services that will attract savings from the rural dwellers because of the level of significance of their deposit to the development of the country. All the more so as commercial banks should also ensure that the rural dwellers are provided with more bank branches, most especially, in areas where there are few or no banks. Credit facilities should also be provided to the people at an affordable rate as this will uplift the level of inclusion and reduce the level of exclusion in the country which will improve the sustainable development in the country. Originality/value/contribution-Empirically, the study attempted to investigate the impact of financial inclusion on sustainable development in Nigeria. The results of the study suggest that government should continue its effort in the area of poverty alleviation by embracing financial inclusion via a vis financial institutions introducing new financial product and services at lower cost that will cater for the disadvantaged group in the society.
The concept of financial constraint have a great influence on company decision and capital market entrance as shareholders and directors recognised its negative implication on firm performance. This paper is the first to conceptualize the theoretical influence of financial constraints (FC) on working capital investment (WCI) and corporate performance through firm internal resources and managerial competency by employing a qualitative approach from a theoretical disposition which has been meagerly demonstrated in the literature. Specifically, bearing in mind the rising unpredictability and issues in the credit and capital markets that has been noticed for numbers of years and the similar intensification in regulatory capital about acquiring external financing, the attention of the firm's gradually shifted to its internal liquidity generated from enterprise operation on the basis of working capital (WC). This study argues that business internal resources through managerial skill and internal capital can to enhance WCI in a financially constrained situation thereby reduces the agency cost and asymmetric information and increases performance. Hence, we conclude that internal funds is suitable to finance WCI in a constrained situation for managers to avoid overinvest or underinvest in working capital asset by controlling for financial constraints. Further review are expected to determine WCI-performance relationship using some vital accounting ratios largely generated from annual reports and accounts.
The impact of bank-specific factors on the performance of the deposit money banks in a country has been an area of inquiry for any bank-based financial system. The research investigates the impacts of bank-specific factors on bank performance in Nigeria within 2014-2018. This research use panel data from ten banks that had the best deposit in 2018. The panel data approach found a significant negative relationship between asset quality and return on asset and a significant positive relationship between loan-to-deposit ratio, capital adequacy, and return on asset. In this regard, strategic management should ensure chasing their functional intermediation role and ensure liquidity preference to meet its day-to-day obligations.JEL Classification: G21, G32, C33 How to Cite:Ariyibi, E.
