The success of filamentous fungi in colonizing most natural environments can be largely attributed to their ability to form an expanding interconnected network, the mycelium, or thallus, constituted by a collection of hyphal apexes in motion producing hyphae and subject to branching and fusion. In this work, we characterize the hyphal network expansion and the structure of the fungus Podospora anserina under controlled culture conditions. To this end, temporal series of pictures of the network dynamics are produced, starting from germinating ascospores and ending when the network reaches a few centimeters width, with a typical image resolution of several micrometers. The completely automated image reconstruction steps allow an easy post-processing and a quantitative analysis of the dynamics. The main features of the evolution of the hyphal network, such as the total length L of the mycelium, the number of "nodes" (or crossing points) N and the number of apexes A, can then be precisely quantified. Beyond these main features, the determination of the distribution of the intrathallus surfaces (S i ) and the statistical analysis of some local measures of N, A and L give new insights on the dynamics of expanding fungal networks. Based on these results, we now aim at developing robust and versatile discrete/continuous mathematical models to further understand the key mechanisms driving the development of the fungus thallus.Due to their paramount role in most ecosystems and in different sectors of human economy, filamentous fungi have attracted a lot of attention in the last decades. At the edge of the fungal colony, apical cells explore new territories in search for food and are mainly involved in nutrient acquisition through the production of extracellular enzymes for the decomposition of organic matter, as well as through the sensing of their local environment 4 . Sub-apical cells generate new hyphae by lateral branching, thus increasing the density and surface area of the colony. In ascomycetes and basidiomycetes, the branches also mediate the hyphal fusion events, or anastomosis, that occur in the thallus and appear to be crucial for the exchange of nutrients and signals
We propose a new explicit pseudo-energy and momentum conserving scheme for the time integration of Hamiltonian systems. The scheme, which is formally secondorder accurate, is based on two key ideas: the integration during the time-steps of forces between free-flight particles and the use of momentum jumps at the discrete time nodes leading to a two-step formulation for the acceleration. The pseudoenergy conservation is established under exact force integration, whereas it is valid to second-order accuracy in the presence of quadrature errors. Moreover, we devise an asynchronous version of the scheme that can be used in the framework of slowfast time-stepping strategies. The scheme is validated against classical benchmarks and on nonlinear or inhomogeneous wave propagation problems.
Origami tessellations are particular textured morphing shell structures. Their unique folding and unfolding mechanisms on a local scale aggregate and bring on large changes in shape, curvature and elongation on a global scale. The existence of these global deformation modes allows for origami tessellations to fit non-trivial surfaces thus inspiring applications across a wide range of domains including structural engineering, architectural design and aerospace engineering. The present paper suggests a homogenization-type two-scale asymptotic method which, combined with standard tools from differential geometry of surfaces, yields a macroscopic continuous characterization of the global deformation modes of origami tessellations and other similar periodic pin-jointed trusses. The outcome of the method is a set of nonlinear differential equations governing the parametrization, metric and curvature of surfaces that the initially discrete structure can fit. The theory is presented through a case study of a fairly generic example: the eggbox pattern. The proposed continuous model predicts correctly the existence of various fittings that are subsequently constructed and illustrated.
This paper deals with a new solid-fluid coupling algorithm between a rigid body and an unsteady compressible fluid flow, using an Embedded Boundary method. The coupling with a rigid body is a first step towards the coupling with a Discrete Element method. The flow is computed using a Finite Volume approach on a Cartesian grid. The expression of numerical fluxes does not affect the general coupling algorithm and we use a one-step high-order scheme proposed by Daru and Tenaud [Daru V,Tenaud C., J. Comput. Phys. 2004]. The Embedded Boundary method is used to integrate the presence of a solid boundary in the fluid. The coupling algorithm is totally explicit and ensures exact mass conservation and a balance of momentum and energy between the fluid and the solid. It is shown that the scheme preserves uniform movement of both fluid and solid and introduces no numerical boundary roughness. The efficiency of the method is demonstrated on challenging one-and two-dimensional benchmarks.
