Tests of steel pipe coatings, while not haphazard in method, are not and can not always be accurate. The ideal pipe test should provide quantitative information about coating performance and condition of coating, and should be expressed numerically.
A well‐designed program of preventive maintenance is important in the efficient functioning of a water Utility. Principles and techniques for such a program are outlined with an emphasis on the cost savings of a corrosion‐control program. The method used by one Utility for determining cost‐benefit ratios is discussed.
