Background and Aim: Basil is well known as a medicinal plant that contains high essential oils and antioxidant compounds that have the potential to improve ovarian development. Thus, basil may have the potential to improve the growth and development of the uterus and placenta for optimal prenatal growth of offspring. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of Indonesian basil maceration on gonad development of mature female albino rats. Materials and Methods: Fifteen 8-week-old female Sprague-Dawley rats, at the diestrus stage of the estrus cycle, were divided into three different treatment groups: Control group (mineral water), bas-low group (1% of basil maceration), and bas-high group (5% of basil maceration). Basil maceration was dissolved and administered in mineral drinking water, and the treatments were given for 20 days (4 estrus cycles). At the end of the treatment period, serum follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), estradiol, and progesterone (Pg) were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The relative weight of the ovary and uterus; diameter and length of uterine cornual; vascularization of uterus; the diameter of uterine glands; the number of primary, secondary, and tertiary de Graaf follicles; the number of corpora luteum; as well as the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in the ovary were determined. Results: There was no significant difference (p>0.05) in the serum FSH level of rats treated with basil maceration drinking water doses of 1% and 5% compared to the control group. However, serum estradiol and Pg concentrations in the 1% and 5% basil maceration groups were significantly higher (p<0.05) than those of the control group. Furthermore, 1% and 5% basil maceration significantly increased the uterus's relative weight, diameter, and vascularization. Serum estradiol concentrations contributed to the elevated expression of VEGF compared to Pg. Conclusion: Administration of basil maceration for 20 days before mating could improve follicle growth and development, eventually increasing estradiol synthesis and secretion, thus improving the uterus's preparation for implantation. This makes basil maceration an attractive candidate in clinical research to enhance the growth and development of the uterus and placenta, which will better support the optimum prenatal growth and development of embryos and fetuses, resulting in superior offspring.
Taoge memiliki berbagai manfaat farmakologis yang berpotensi besar untuk meningkatkan kesehatan. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengeksplorasi keamanan dari konsumsi maserasi taoge melalui pengamatan terhadap profil hematologi dan biokimia darah. Sebanyak 15 ekor tikus betina galur Sprague Dawley berumur 8 minggu, memiliki bobot badan 220-230 g, dan belum pernah bunting dikelompokkan secara acak ke dalam 3 kelompok perlakuan (n=5 tikus), yaitu kelompok kontrol (diberi air mineral); kelompok maserasi taoge 1%; dan kelompok maserasi taoge 5%. Pemberian maserasi dilakukan melalui air minum dan dilaksanakan selama 20 hari. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa secara umum perlakuan maserasi taoge tidak memberikan pengaruh nyata (P>0.05) terhadap profil hematologi dan biokimia darah tikus percobaan. Terdapat peningkatan signifikan (P>0.05) pada kadar hemoglobin pada kelompok maserasi taoge 1% dibandingkan dengan kontrol yang lebih tinggi dari nilai normal. Hal yang serupa juga terjadi pada nilai neutrofil yang lebih tinggi dari nilai normal namun tidak berbeda nyata dengan kontrol (p>0.05). Selain keduanya, semua parameter menunjukkan nilai yang tidak berbeda nyata dibandingkan dengan kelompok kontrol dan berada pada rentang nilai normal.. Hal ini mengindikasikan bahwa pemberian maserasi tauge tidak memberikan efek negatif dan toksik pada dosis 1 dan 5% terhadap profil darah serta fungsi organ hati dan ginjal.
The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of a herbal combination of avocado, mung bean sprouts, and holy basil (Jamu ATOKE) in optimizing the reproductive health of adult female rats. Eighteen female Sprague Dawley rats aged 9-10 weeks old weighing around 180-250 g, and had not been pregnant previously were equally and randomly divided into 3 groups: one control group and two treatment groups (n= 6 rats per group). The treatment groups received Jamu ATOKE with a concentration of 2.5 and 5%, respectively. Jamu ATOKE was added to the drinking water and consumed by the rats for 30 days prior to pregnancy. Reproductivity (pregnancy success, estrogen and progesterone hormone concentrations), and health performance (body weight gain, food, and water consumption, motor activity, red blood cell (RBC) count, white blood cell (WBC) count and differentials, SGPT, SGOT, ureum, and creatinine) of rats were observed. The results showed that groups receiving the Jamu ATOKE had better reproductive and health performance compared to those of the control group. The administration of Jamu ATOKE can significantly increase the concentration of estrogen and progesterone in rats (P0.05). It can also improve the fertility and health of the female rats prior to pregnancy.
Traditional medicine is generally considered to be safer than modern medicine because it has lower incidence of side effects and also relatively easy to obtain. The purpose of this study was to examine the analgesic effect of herbs made of basil, lime, honey, candlenut, and Tiwai onions as well as to evaluate the potential of these herbs as a stamina stimulator. This study was conducted at the Laboratory of Animal Management Unit, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, IPB University, from January–February 2022. Mice were divided into four groups based on the treatment dose with each group consisted of five mice. An analgesic test was conducted using hot water immersion tail-flick test method and the stamina test was performed with swimming endurance test. Data obtained were analyzed using Microsoft Excel 2019 and Minitab 19. Significant differences of the average of each group were shown statistically using the one-way ANOVA and confirmed with Tukey test. Results showed that mice given the combination herbal medicine infusion of with a dose of 4 g/kg body weight had the highest average tail lift time compared to the controls (p<0.05). Mice with a treatment dose of 1 g/kg body weight had the highest analgesic power compared to the other treatment doses. The highest swimming duration was observed in group that received a dose of 1 g/kg body weight. It is concluded that this herbal combination can be used as an analgesic and a stamina stimulator.
Mortality and health disturbances in children often correlate with maternal health and fertility. Avocado, mung bean sprouts, and holy basil have been traditionally used to improve maternal health, before and during pregnancy. This study was aimed to assess the efficacy of herbal combination of avocado, mung bean sprouts, and holy basil (Jamu ATOKE) in optimizing reproductive health. Eighteen female Sprague Dawley rats (9–10 weeks old, BW: 180–250 g) were randomly divided into 3 treatment groups (n=6 rats for each group) of control, group I and II. ATOKE were added into rats drinking water and consumed for 30 days before pregnancy. After the rats were pregnant and gave birth, pup per parent ratio, pup mortality, and pup health performance (body weight gain, feed and drink consumption, motor activity, pup speed in finding light and feed, red blood cell (RBC) count, white blood cell (WBC) count and differential, SGPT, SGOT, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, and proinflammatory mediators (TNF-α and IL-6) were analyzed. Pups born to in group I had a generally better health performance compared to the control group. There was a 100% mortality in the litter of group II due to the excessive aggressive behavior of the dams as a sign of toxicity. Administration of 2.5% Jamu ATOKE showed the best effects on the health and intelligence of the rat pup.
