BACKGROUND: There are few correlational studies comparing family-work reconciliation between groups of women. OBJECTIVE: We intend to correlate and compare the use of time, purchasing power, and job satisfaction between two groups of working women, women with children and women without children. METHODS: This is a correlational and comparative study. The following instruments were used: Activities Diary; Brazilian Criteria for Economic Classification; and the short version of the Quality of Working Life Questionnaire. A total of 171 women participated in the study: one group was composed of 78 women with children and the other group was composed of 93 women without children. Data were analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk test, Wilcoxon test, Student's t-test and the Kolmogorov Smirnov test. RESULTS: Women with children spent more hours/day on hygiene, taking care of elderly individuals, practicing their religion, and studying (p = 0.001), but they presented no statistical differences in job satisfaction from those women without children (p = 0.2362). Women with children belonged to a higher economic classification and had greater purchasing power than women without children. CONCLUSIONS: Having children is a variable that influences time use, purchasing power, and job satisfaction among women and the presence of children is a factor that may increase the purchasing power of a woman.
Mulheres. Papel Ocupacional. Uso do Tempo. The aim of this study was to investigate and compare the importance and meaning given to roles played by working women with and without children, as well as being satisfied with the way they occupy their own time. The theoretical framework used was the Model of Human Occupation. This is a descriptive and comparative study with qualitative approach. The instruments "Role Checklist" and a "Semistructured Interview" (elaborated by the researchers) were applied. Eight working women participated, divided into two groups: with and without children. The data in the list were descriptively tabulated and the interviews were transcribed and analyzed by "Thematic Content Analysis". Three categories emerged "Occupation as identity and its meanings from roles"; "Satisfaction and dissatisfaction with the use of time to participate in new occupations"; "The lack of time resulting from role overload." The results showed that in both groups the role of worker and family member is mentioned as very significant. For women with children, working balances roles in and out of the home, as well as helping the family financially. In all interviews emerged the need to better manage their time to engage in more occupations.
Purpose: The goal of the present study was to investigate chief executives’ intention and potential to create a family-supportive culture in the Brazilian context, further assessing the role of their aspirations in their employees’ perceptions. Methodology: Two researchers conducted 60 minutes of online semi-structured interviews with CEOs of seven companies of different sizes (measured by the number of employees), economic sectors, and capital structure. To complement the data gathered from CEOs, we also conducted private and individual 30-minute online interviews with three employees from each company. Findings: A total of four categories and 11 sub-categories emerged from the analysis of CEO interviews, and four categories and six sub-categories emerged from the analysis of employee interviews. Originality: The results suggest that family-supportive culture is promoted through behaviors that are consistent with the organization’s core values, as well as through commitment of the agenda and resources of the company’s leadership team.
