Corpus studies have become an undisputed aid for the evolution of translation, transferring knowledge from the academia to develop tools that have invaluably helped the profession. Nevertheless, the demands of the market require translators to improve their efficiency in order to adapt to its hectic pace. The aim of this paper is to present a possible solution through the use of corpus-based tools that are usually neglected in translation: writing aids. First, the reality of the translation market will be studied to understand the current context and translators' needs. Then, we will analyze some of the existing tools derived from corpus studies available for translators, both the most and less usual. Finally, we will focus on a booming sector of the market, that of 1. This paper focuses on the study of word combinations “of common usage” which are “lexicalized”, have “syntactic and semantic stability, may be idiomatized and carry connotations, and have an emphatic or intensifying function.” (Gläser 1994/1995, 45). Following previous research on Languages for Specific Purposes (LSP) and legal phraseology, we will define, identify and classify these units in English and Spanish according to their form and meaning, using a comparable corpus of sales contracts. To carry out our study, we will focus on a number of descriptors that are commonly used within these units on the basis of the headwords they collocate with, in order to determine how specific or general they are in their form, use and meaning since this issue poses translation problems. As genres determine matters such as or terminology and phraseology, the results will be useful for specialized translators and legal drafters.
This paper analyzes the use of the -ing and -ndo forms in English and Spanish in sales contracts. More specifically, it aims to answer three questions: 1. Do the -ing and the -ndo forms occur more frequently in sales contracts than in general language? 2. Do English sales contracts contain more -ing forms used in more syntactic functions than the Spanish -ndo in Spanish sales contracts? 3. Are both the -ing forms and the -ndo forms found in all or most parts of the sales contracts retained for this study? Our study is based on two comparable corpora of English and Spanish: a legal corpus containing sales contracts, and a general corpus. Our corpora provide the following answers to the questions posed: 1. Both the -ing and the -ndo forms occur more frequently in sales contracts than in general language; 2. There are more -ing forms in English sales contracts than there are -ndo forms in Spanish sales contracts, but in both cases, they are used in a variety of syntactic functions; 3. Both the -ing forms and the -ndo forms are found in most parts of the sales contracts used in this study.
En el presente trabajo se presenta un estudio empírico con el que se pretende determinar hasta qué punto los traductores en formación se sienten legitimados para cuestionar la capacidad del experto. Se planteó la revisión de cuatro traducciones al español de un contrato de distribución comercial en inglés realizadas por especialistas en Comercio a 18 alumnos españoles de Traducción Jurídico-Económica divididos en dos grupos: uno que conocía la experiencia del autor del texto y otro que la ignoraba. Los datos se clasificaron y analizaron cuantitativa y cualitativamente en función de la tipología de errores identificados, las estrategias de revisión empleadas para subsanarlos y las motivaciones que llevaron a los estudiantes a realizar mejoras. El análisis llevado a cabo confirma tendencias distintas en función del (des)conocimiento del perfil de experto del traductor.
Dadas las restricciones temporales, se suele asumir que los estudiantes de traducción manejan adecuadamente las habilidades traductoras básicas cuando comienzan su especialización, como es caso de la documentación. El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar cómo se enfrentan estos estudiantes al proceso de documentación especializada. Para ello, presentamos un estudio de caso realizado en una asignatura de traducción especializada que utilizaremos para analizar si las fuentes de documentación utilizadas permiten a los estudiantes resolver los problemas de un encargo y así intentar comprender si una buena base es la clave de un buen proceso de documentación en traducción especializada o si ésta requiere mayor énfasis en su práctica.
