Background/purpose: Given that many patients find the cost of mandibular rehabilitation through complete overdenture implants to be beyond their financial scope, many seek a more affordable treatment. The aims of this study were to compare the clinical outcomes of single mandibular implant-retained overdentures versus that of complete dentures. Materials and methods: Thirteen edentulous patients with a mean age of 71 years were enrolled in this investigation. They were treated with a single implant inserted into the mandibular midline, followed by rehabilitation with complete dentures. The mandibular dentures were adhered with a locator or magnetic attachment after 10 weeks of adaptation.-Patient satisfaction was assessed by means of a visual analogue scale(VAS) questionnaire both on the day of attachment connection and 3 months later. Chewing efficiency was assessed by a sieve test before and after connecting the attachment. Within-subject comparisons were performed either by using paired-sample t-tests or Wilcoxon signed-rank tests to test patient satisfaction and chewing efficiency (P Z 0.05). Results: No implants were lost nor were denture fracture found during the observation period. Significant improvements were observed in all parameters of patient satisfaction (with P values ranging from <0.001 to w0.043) after attachment of the mandibular dentures with a single midline implant. Furthermore, the objective chewing efficiency of patients significantly improved after implant connection (P<0.001).
IntroductionWe describe the location, size, histopathologic aspect and immunohistochemical expression of a rhabdomyomatous mesenchymal hamartoma, with the aim of providing useful information for its correct diagnosis.Case presentationA 31-year-old Chinese man first presented 2 years previously with a solitary subcutaneous mass on the left side of his neck and under his mastoid process; the mass’s size was 2×2cm. The mass increased in the size in the past 2 years. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a dumbbell shaped and well-outlined highly reflective mass, with its upperpart infiltrating the interspace of the atlanto-occipital joint. The mass was surgically removed. On macroscopic examination, the mass was oblong and partly encapsulated, the size of the mass was 4.9×3.5×3cm, and its cut side was grey. On histologic examination, it showed a disordered collection of bundles of mature striated muscle fibres arranged in a haphazard manner and interspersed with adipose tissue, fibrocytes or mesenchymocytes and collagen, and had a myxoid matrix. On immunochemical examination, mature striated muscle was positive for desmin and myoglobin, adipose tissue and nerves were positive for S-100 protein, and fibrocytes or mesenchymocytes and collagen were positive for vimentin and cluster of differentiation 34. A diagnosis of rhabdomyomatous mesenchymal hamartoma was established.ConclusionsRhabdomyomatous mesenchymal hamartoma is a rare dermal or subcutaneous lesion, and we describe its immunohistochemical expression for the first time. This case report provides more information on the microscopic appearance and immunohistochemical expression
In rabbits, a 7-day regimen of appropriate doses of diclofenac sodium and parecoxib did not adversely affect osseointegration of dental implants and bone healing in calvaria, neither short nor long term (12 weeks).
The clinical characteristics of undifferentiated (embryonal) sarcoma of the liver (UESL) were investigated and the best treatment modalities were recommended. Both histology and immuno-histochemistry demonstrated the cellular features of this peculiar tumor. The tumor size was 12 cm multiply 9 cm multiply 8 cm in the right liver lobe. The patient underwent surgical resection of the tumor. The postoperative recovery was uneventful and she died eight months after diagnosis. The tumor showed mixed spindle and polygonal cells within the myxoid matrix. Some tumor cells contained eosinophilic hyaline globules that were positive for resistant diastase. Immunohistochemistry showed positive vimentin. Stellate and spindle cells were positively stained with alpha-1-antichymotrypsin (AACT) and CD68. This case indicates that UESL is not obviously differentiated in old-aged adults.
