The objective of the research is to know the effects of grammar and vocabulary mastery on students' reading comprehension. This research is a survey at private universities in Bekasi. The total sample of the research is 80 students. The data collection technique of grammar mastery, vocabulary mastery, and reading comprehension is by conducting three sets of multiple choice tests consisting of 30 questions for each test. The data analysis technique of the research is multiple linear regression analysis. Before conducting the regression analysis, there are some prerequisite tests, among others the normality, linearity, multicollinearity, and heteroscedasticity test. The result of the research is: 1) There is a significant effect of grammar and vocabulary mastery jointly on students' reading comprehension at private universities in Bekasi. 2) There is a significant effect of grammar mastery on students' reading comprehension at private universities in Bekasi. 3) There is a significant effect of vocabulary mastery on students' reading comprehension at private universities in Bekasi.
Since young learners have special characteristics in learning a foreign language, teachers have to create an interesting method in teaching English especially vocabulary. One of the methods usually used in teaching vocabulary is Communicative Language Teaching (CLT). The objective of the research is to know how to teach vocabulary using pictures and games in the CLT method, to investigate the advantages of teaching English vocabulary through pictures and games in CLT method, as well as to investigate the problems that occurred in teaching and learning process. The method used in this study is action research with 30 participants. The researcher collected the data by having observation, conversation, and interview. In delivering materials there are three necessary elements, those are engaged, study, and activate stage. The result shows that all the students gave positive responses to the use of pictures and games in vocabulary learning. They felt that pictures and games in the CLT method could help them understand the word meaning more easily and motivate them to learn vocabulary since the classroom activities were more interesting. Besides, this method also helped the students to pronounce each word correctly. However, there are some problems, such as the students usually feel bored when they only have one discussion for a long time. When the students have never heard of the word before, the teacher must explain it to them first. Besides, the class could be crowded and noisy.
<span>In writing courses, the students tend to be more aware of technical errors in writing including the mechanics. Conversely, they tend to focus more on the idea or content of their writing when they produce papers to fulfill the assignment of non-writing courses. Whereas, the punctuation errors and misspelled words will make the meaning of the sentence ambiguous. This study aims to find out the degree of mechanics accuracy of students’ writings and what kind of mechanics mistakes mostly produced. The mechanics that were analyzed include punctuation, capitalization, spelling, italicization, and numbering of 65 writing assignments of three non-writing courses. The method used in this study was content analysis. The result of this study revealed that there were number of mechanics mistakes in students writing assignments, but those mistakes did not greatly affect readers’ understanding. The punctuation using of students’ writing assignments was 41% accurate; the capitalization using was 82% accurate; the spelling using was 83% accurate; the italicization using was 96% accurate; and the numbering using was 98% accurate.</span>
In order to improve the English skills, students may not only depend on the teachers; yet they need to motivate themselves for independent learning. Due to the development of mobile technology, there are many English Language Learning applications that can be downloaded. This study aims to know how far the English Language Learning applications, especially Android-based applications, are used to help students in mastering English. This study used quantitative and qualitative method through questionnaire and library research. The result shows that most of the students have ever downloaded and used Android-based English Language Learning applications, and they feel it is very helpful in improving their English skills. However, those applications still need to be developed in order to support the more effective utilization of MALL.
This research aimed to analyze the effect of students’ perception of using teaching media and vocabulary mastery on students’ listening skill. The method used in this research was survey with double regression technique. It was conducted at a Private Vocational School in North Jakarta. The numbers of the samples were 60 students. The researchers got the data from the questionnaire by using Likert Scale. The result of this research showed that: 1) There is a significant effect of students’ perception of teaching media and vocabulary mastery jointly on students’ listening skill; 2) There is a significant effect of students’ perception of teaching media on students’ listening skill; 3) There is a significant effect of vocabulary mastery on students’ listening skill.
