Background:Handoff is an important communication process involving the exchange of patient information between healthcare workers. Situation, Background, Assessment and Recommendation (SBAR) is a standardised tool that is created to enhance the efficiency of communication thus giving rise to effective collaboration, increases patient satisfaction as well as patient outcome. Although, SBAR was initiated in this private hospital for almost a decade and reinforced in 2017, the overall acceptance and usage of SBAR reflect otherwise. Hence, the purpose of this study is to determine the nurses' satisfaction towards the usage of SBAR as a communication tool and its association with socio-demographic variables. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study design was conducted with 234 nurses selected using a simple random sampling at a private hospital, Penang. A piloted and validated, Handover Evaluation Scale (HES) was used as the study tool. Results: Overall, nurses were satisfied with the use of SBAR (M = 68.9, SD = 11.94) and there was a significant association between gender and satisfaction of nurses towards usage of SBAR (t = 2.130; p < 0.05). Conclusion: Although the nurses were satisfied with the use of SBAR, there is a need to investigate the reason for lack of satisfaction with its efficiency of implementation.
Introduction: Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious airborne disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis which is transmitted through droplets. However, despite Tuberculosis being a curable and preventable disease, TB is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in Malaysia. Recently there had been a rise in the number of suspected TB cases in health clinics in Kg Pandan, Kuala Lumpur. Therefore, there is a need to know the resident's level of knowledge on Tuberculosis as this disease is a communicable disease. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to determine the level of knowledge regarding Tuberculosis among residents of an apartment in Kg Pandan, Kuala Lumpur and to determine whether there are any significant differences between demographic variable and level of knowledge regarding TB among residents of an apartment in Kg Pandan, Kuala Lumpur. Methodology: This is a cross sectional descriptive study on 352 residents of an apartment in Kg Pandan, Kuala Lumpur through simple random sampling. A validated 41-item questionnaire was used to determine the knowledge of TB according to causes, mode of transmission, symptoms, risk factors and prevention. Total scores range from 0 to 41. Result: Finding showed that the participants had an overall mean score of 28.45±5.18 out of a total score of 41. There are no significant differences between level of knowledge on TB and demographic variable except for level of education. Conclusion:Findings indicated that there is a need to provide measures to create better awareness of the community especially on the mode of transmission of TB as prevention is better than cure.
Introduction: Critical thinking is an important element in nursing practice as well as being a vital educational outcome in any nursing curriculum. Critical thinking can influence the outcome of patient care and patient satisfaction. Objective: To determine the level of critical thinking ability among nursing students in two nursing colleges and its differences according to social demographic variables. Method: This was a cross sectional descriptive study design in which Critical Ability Scale for College Students were used to collect data from 158 nursing students in two private nursing colleges in Malaysia. Participants were recruited through convenience sampling. Results: The mean overall score for critical thinking ability was 70.6±6.98 with scores ranging from 56 to 89. The mean score of the subscales was 3.63±0.50 for intellectual, eagerness and health skepticism abilities, 3.63±0.42 for intellectual honesty ability, 3.61± 0.41 for prudence ability and 2.68±0.64 for objectivity ability. There are no significant differences between the independent variables and level of critical thinking ability. Conclusion: A high critical thinking ability score was reported with intellectual, eagerness and health skepticism being the highest subscale. The way forward requires academicians and clinicians to work together to ensure a transfer of knowledge and skills from the classroom to the clinical environment in order to develop and enhance the ability to think critically in making clinical decision and produce thinking nurses for the future.
