RESUMO -O artigo objetiva identificar os impactos gerados pela atividade turística e as características da economia do município de Currais Novos (Rio Grande do Norte, Brasil). O estudo caracteriza-se como descritivo e de caráter exploratório. Utiliza a abordagem quali-quantitativa, mediante pesquisa bibliográfica, interativa, documental e de campo. Destacam-se os aspectos gerais e a caracterização da economia municipal, e identifica-se o comércio como a principal atividade econômica do município, a participação do turismo na economia local como gerador de emprego, e os investimentos públicos e privados existentes no município. Por fim, reflete-se sobre a importância da economia para o destino, onde se destacam as ameaças e oportunidades econômicas, além das contribuições que o turismo lhe fornece, constatando-se a necessidade de desviar o foco do comércio e ampliar a base econômica curraisnovense.Palavras-chave: Turismo; Planejamento Turístico; Economia local.ABSTRACT -This paper aims to identify the impacts generated by tourism and the economical characteristics of Currais Novos (Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil). The study is characterized as descriptive and exploratory. It uses the qualitative and quantitative approach, through out literature, interactive, documentary and field research. It is highlighted the general aspects and characterization of the local economy, and it is identified that the trade is the main economic activity of the city, the tourism appears in the local economy as a job generator, and there are public and private investments in the city. Finally, it is made an analysis about the importance of the economy to the destination, where there are economic threats and opportunities, in addition to contributions that tourism provides to this local, and then it is found the need to change the focus in the trade and expand the local economic base.
