In this era of globalisation, translation technologies have become more popular in daily communication, the education sector, and the translation industry. It is observed that there is a prevalent use of machine translation (MT) among translation learners. The proper use versus abuse of MT can be a critical issue regarding its role in and impact on translation teaching. This exploratory study aims at investigating learners’ and instructors’ knowledge of MT, experience in MT use, perceived MT quality, ethics of MT use, and the perceived relationship between MT and translation training, in order to figure out the usefulness of MT in translation competence acquisition and the necessity of MT training. To this end, we conducted surveys and semi-structured interviews and found that the influence of MT in translation competence acquisition is determined by the properties of MT and learners’ quality. MT is particularly helpful in gaining lexical knowledge and knowledge to ensure translation efficiency, but not in bicultural knowledge. However, such usefulness builds on learners’ language proficiency, analytic ability, and learning motivation. In light of the findings, issues including the sustainability of MT from ethical and linguistic perspectives, and the potential and proper use of MT to inform translator training, are discussed.
Abstract-Proverbs, in nature, are greatly associated with culture. In both form and meaning, they are concise and comprehensive, vivid in images and select materials widely, delivering all sorts of physiological information and cultural knowledge and explicitly expressing all human beings' life, social and historical experience. Since the ancient time, animals have been the most intimate friend of human beings, and people intend to express their feelings and points of view on animals. Therefore, some animal words are added with people's feelings and associations, human beings often deliver ideas and feelings through animals. There are lots of animal proverbs in English and Chinese. Metaphor is ubiquitous. It is not only a rhetorical device but also a mode of thoughts. There are some similarities and differences in animal proverbs' metaphor because of the similar and different faith, value, and ways of thinking and aesthetic orientation. I will make a comparative and contrastive analysis of metaphorical meanings between English and Chinese proverbs and compare some representative animal proverb metaphors. This study is carried out from three main aspects: the same animal produce the same association and metaphorical meaning; the same animal produce different emotions and associations; different animals produce the same association and metaphorical meaning.
This paper discusses a design of a Battery Management System (BMS) solution for extending the life of Nickel-Metal Hydride (NI-MH) battery. Combined with application of electric boat, a State of Charge (SoC) optimal operation range control method based on high precision energy metering and online SoC correction is proposed. Firstly, a power metering scheme is introduced to reduce the original energy measurement error. Secondly, by establishing a model based parameter identification method and combining with Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) method, the estimation accuracy of SoC is guaranteed. Finally, SoC optimal operation range control method is presented to make battery running in the optimal range. After two years of operation, the battery managed by proposed method has much better status, compared to batteries that use AH integral method and fixed SoC operating range. Considering the SoC estimation of NI-MH battery is more difficult becausing special electrical characteristics, proposed method also would have a very good reference value for other types of battery management.
In the last few decades, corpora have achieved a significant place in the field of applied linguistics, teaching pedagogy, translation studies and academic circles around the globe. As corpora has developed into the multidisciplinary approach to be used in mixed (both qualitative and quantitative) studies, developing linguistic corpora has achieved a significant interest in academics all over the world. The volume Academic writing with corpora: a resource book for datadriven learning by Tatyana Karpenko-Seccombe involves recently developed corpora-based material for the practitioners, scholars and researchers working in the field of corpus linguistics and corpus-based studies. All this is reflected in the diversity of corpus-based studies collection where linguistic, functional and cognitive approaches have been employed by scholars to make use of corpora. With four chapters, the impressive volume consists of three sections, introducing the practical implementation of corpora, corpus tools, and features of corpus-based studies and provides understanding about usefulness of corpora for researchers and practitioners in producing quality research.The first chapter, the introduction by Karpenko-Seccombe offers the purpose and outline of the book and the prevalent theme of the volume. Karpenko-Seccombe discusses in detail how corpus tools have been incorporated effectively in the academic research today at global level. Further, Karpenko-Seccombe presents how this corpus can be exploited autonomously by the researchers and academicians to make use of such corpus tools for conducting effective research.In addition, the significant contribution of this chapter is the brief introduction to a number of other concordancers (concordance program): BNC-English corpora (the British National Corpus, https://www.english-corpora.org/bnc/), SkELL (Sketch Engine for Language Learning, https://www.sketchengine.eu/ skell/) and MICUSP (Michigan Corpus of Upper-level Student Papers, 2009, http:// micusp.elicorpora.info/). In this vein, Karpenko-Seccombe includes practical illustrations and exercises for the practitioners to make use of these illustrations for effective teaching of corpora tools. Further, Karpenko-Seccombe makes a comparison of these tools as She says that MICUSP is different from the previous corpus tools in that it doesn't present results in concordance lines but highlights them in the source texts.
