The present review article addresses the vibration behavior of bladed disks encountered e. g. in aircraft engines as well as industrial gas and steam turbines. The utilization of the dissipative effects of dry friction in mechanical joints is a common means of the passive mitigation of structural vibrations caused by aeroelastic excitation mechanisms. The prediction of the vibration behavior is a scientific challenge due to (a) the strongly nonlinear and non-uniform contact interactions involving local sticking, sliding and liftoff, (b) topological complexity of the coupled structure, and (c) the multidisciplinary character of the problem associated with the need to account for structural mechanical as well as fluid dynamical effects. The purpose of this article is the overview and discussion the current state of the art of vibration prediction approaches. The modeling approaches in this work embrace the description of the rotating bladed disk, the contact modeling, the consideration of aeroelastic effects, appropriate model reduction techniques and the exploitation of the rotationally periodic nature of the problem. Underplatform dampers (UPD) are commonly used in aircraft engines to mitigate the risk of high-cycle fatigue failure of turbine blades. The energy dissipated at the friction contact interface of the damper reduces the vibration amplitude significantly, and the couplings of the blades can also lead to significant shifts of the resonance frequencies of the bladed disk. The highly nonlinear behaviour of bladed disks constrained by UPDs requires an advanced modelling approach to ensure that the correct damper geometry is selected during the design of the turbine, and that no unexpected resonance frequencies and amplitudes will occur in operation. Approaches based on an explicit model of the damper in combination with multi-harmonic balance solvers have emerged as a promising way to predict the nonlinear behaviour of UPDs correctly, however rigorous experimental validations are required before approaches of this type can be used with confidence.In this study, a nonlinear analysis based on an updated explicit damper model having different levels of detail is performed, and the results are evaluated against a newly-developed UPD test rig. Detailed linear finite element models are used as input for the nonlinear analysis, allowing the inclusion of damper flexibility and inertia effects. The nonlinear friction interface between the blades and the damper is described with a dense grid of 3D friction contact elements which allow accurate capturing of the underlying nonlinear mechanism that drives the global nonlinear behaviour. The introduced explicit damper model showed a great dependence on the correct contact pressure distribution. The use of an accurate, measurement based, distribution, better matched the nonlinear dynamic behaviour of the test rig. Good agreement with the measured frequency response data could only be reached when the zero harmonic term (constant term) was included in the multi-harmonic expansion of the nonlinear problem, highlighting its importance when the contact interface experiences large normal load variation. The resulting numerical damper kinematics with strong translational and rotational motion, and the global blades frequency response were fully validated experimentally, showing the accuracy of the suggested high detailed explicit UPD modelling approach.
This paper investigates model-order reduction methods for geometrically nonlinear structures. The parametrisation method of invariant manifolds is used and adapted to the case of mechanical systems in oscillatory form expressed in the physical basis, so that the technique is directly applicable to mechanical problems discretised by the finite element method. Two nonlinear mappings, respectively related to displacement and velocity, are introduced, and the link between the two is made explicit at arbitrary order of expansion, under the assumption that the damping matrix is diagonalised by the conservative linear eigenvectors. The same development is performed on the reduced-order dynamics which is computed at generic order following different styles of parametrisation. More specifically, three different styles are introduced and commented: the graph style, the complex normal form style and the real normal form style. These developments allow making better connections with earlier works using these parametrisation methods. The technique is then applied to three different examples. A clamped-clamped arch with increasing curvature is first used to show an example of a system with a softening behaviour turning to hardening at larger amplitudes, which can be replicated with a single mode reduction. Secondly, the case of a cantilever beam is investigated. It is shown that invariant manifold of the first mode shows a folding point at large amplitudes. This exemplifies the failure of the graph style due to the folding point on a real structure, whereas the normal form style is able to pass over the folding. Finally, a MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical System) micromirror undergoing large rotations is used to show the importance of using high-order expansions on an industrial example.
The objective of this contribution is to compare two methods proposed recently in order to build efficient reduced-order models for geometrically nonlinear structures. The first method relies on the normal form theory that allows one to obtain a nonlinear change of coordinates for expressing the reduced-order dynamics in an invariant-based span of the phase space. The second method is the modal derivative approach, and more specifically, the quadratic manifold defined in order to derive a second-order nonlinear change of coordinates. Both methods share a common point of view, willing to introduce a nonlinear mapping to better define a reduced-order model that could take more properly into account the nonlinear restoring forces. However, the calculation methods are different and the quadratic manifold approach has not the invariance property embedded in its definition.
