Polyiodide.4norganisch-chemisches Institut dcr Universitiat, Ramistrasse 76, CH-8001 Zfirich (23. X. 75) Summary. Tetrammme-copper(I1)-tetraiodide Cu(NHs)& crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C 2/m. The crystal structurc has bcen determined from X-ray diffractometer data and refincd to R , = 2.2%. Four coplanar nitrogcn atoms and two axial iodine atoms form an octahedral coordination around Cu(I1) with a pronounced 4 + 2 tctragonal distortion. A connection of the Cu(I1) atoms by linear, ccntrosymmctric 1: -polyiodide ions results in infinite chains of [Cu(NH3):+I$-]-units. The central I-I-bond distance in 1;-is 2.802(1) A; a considerable amount of 1-1 bonding is indicated by the distance of 3.342(1) A found for the terminal bonds. These intramolecular bond distances correspond to calculated I-I-bond orders of 0.80 and 0.43.
