The human capacity for vibrotactile frequency discrimination has been compared directly for glabrous and hairy skin regions by means of a two-alternative, forced-choice psychophysical procedure in five subjects. Sinusoidal vibratory stimuli, delivered by means of a 4-mm-diam probe, were first used to obtain detection threshold values for the two skin sites, the finger tip and the dorsal forearm, at four standard frequencies, 20, 50, 100, and 200 Hz. Values confirmed previous results showing detection thresholds were markedly higher on hairy skin than on glabrous skin. For the discrimination task, each standard frequency, at an amplitude four times detection threshold, was paired with a series of comparison frequencies, and discrimination capacity then was quantified by deriving from psychometric function curves, measures of the discriminable frequency increment (Deltaf) and the Weber Fraction (Deltaf/f), which, when plotted as a function of the four standard frequencies, revealed similar capacities for frequency discrimination at the two skin sites at the standard frequencies of 20, 100, and 200 Hz but an equivocal difference at 50 Hz. Cutaneous local anesthesia produced a marked impairment in vibrotactile detection and discrimination at the low standard frequencies of 20 and 50 Hz but little effect at higher frequencies. In summary, the results reveal, first, a striking similarity in vibrotactile discriminative performance in hairy and glabrous skin despite marked differences in detection thresholds for the two sites, and, second, the results confirm that vibrotactile detection and discrimination in hairy skin depend on superficial receptors at low frequencies but depend on deep, probably Pacinian corpuscle, receptors for high frequencies.

The mechanisms underlying distension-evoked peristalsis in the colon are incompletely understood. It is well known that, following colonic distension, 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) is released from enterochromaffin (EC) cells in the intestinal mucosa. It is also known that exogenous 5-HT can stimulate peristalsis. These observations have led some investigators to propose that endogenous 5-HT release from EC cells might be involved in the initiation of colonic peristalsis, following distension. However, because no direct evidence exists to support this hypothesis, the aim of this study was to determine directly whether release of 5-HT from EC cells was required for distension-evoked colonic peristalsis. Real-time amperometric recordings of 5-HT release and video imaging of colonic wall movements were performed on isolated segments of guinea pig distal colon, during distension-evoked peristalsis. Amperometric recordings revealed basal and transient release of 5-HT from EC cells before and during the initiation of peristalsis, respectively. However, removal of mucosa (and submucosal plexus) abolished 5-HT release but did not inhibit the initiation of peristalsis nor prevent the propagation of fecal pellets or intraluminal fluid. Maintained colonic distension by fecal pellets induced repetitive peristaltic waves, whose intrinsic frequency was also unaffected by removal of the submucosal plexus and mucosa, although their propagation velocities were slower. In conclusion, the mechanoreceptors and sensory neurons activated by radial distension to initiate peristalsis lie in the myenteric plexus and/or muscularis externa, and their activation does not require the submucosal plexus, release of 5-HT from EC cells, nor the presence of the mucosa. The propagation of peristalsis and propulsion of liquid or solid content along the colon is entrained by activity within the myenteric plexus and/or muscularis externa and does not require sensory feedback from the mucosa, nor neural inputs arising from submucosal ganglia.

Most statistical analyses of fMRI data assume that the nature, timing and duration of the psychological processes being studied are known. However, in many areas of psychological inquiry, it is hard to specify this information a priori. Examples include studies of drug uptake, emotional states or experiments with a sustained stimulus. In this paper we assume that the timing of a subject's activation onset and duration are random variables drawn from unknown population distributions. We propose a technique for estimating these distributions assuming no functional form, and allowing for the possibility that some subjects may show no response. We illustrate how these distributions can be used to approximate the probability that a voxel/region is activated as a function of time. Further a procedure is discussed that uses a hidden Markov random field model to cluster voxels based on characteristics of their onset, duration, and anatomical location. These methods are applied to an fMRI study (n = 24) of state anxiety, and are well suited for investigating individual differences in state-related changes in fMRI activity and other measures.
