TWO TEXT FIQURES AND ONE PLATE (NINE FIGURES) AUTHOBS' ABBBl'RAOFTritrichomonas foetus (Riedmiiller) which occurs in the genital tract of domestie cows and which appears to he associated with pathological conditions, including sterility and abortion, has been found in American cows and its morphology studied.T h e spindle-shaped body is 1 0 to 2 5 fi in length and hears three anterior flagella and a poaterior flagellum which constitutes the marginal filament of the nearly full-length undulating membrane and eontinues posteriorly as a trailing flagellum. There is a n accessory filament in the undulating membrane. The axostyle is of the thick, hyaline t y p e and contains endoaxostylar granules in the capitulum and hears a chromatic ring at the point of emergence from the body. There is a well-developed costa under the undulating membrane and a simple type of parabasal body.In its morphology this species more nearly resembles such intestinal forms as T. augusta and T. muris than it does Trichomonas vaginalis of man, since the latter has four anterior flagella, a short undulating membrane without an accessory filament, no trailing flagellum, a different type of axostyle, and a parabasal filament along with its larger parabasal body.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
