We report on the measurement of the γp → J/ψp cross section from Eγ = 11.8 GeV down to the threshold at 8.2 GeV using a tagged photon beam with the GlueX experiment. We find the total cross section falls toward the threshold less steeply than expected from two-gluon exchange models. The differential cross section dσ/dt has an exponential slope of 1.67 ± 0.39 GeV −2 at 10.7 GeV average energy. The LHCb pentaquark candidates P + c can be produced in the s-channel of this reaction. We see no evidence for them and set model-dependent upper limits on their branching fractions B(P + c → J/ψp).
In computer science, an expected outcome of a student's education is programming skill. This working group investigated the programming competency students have as they complete their first one or two courses in computer science. In order to explore options for assessing students, the working group developed a trial assessment of whether students can program. The underlying goal of this work was to initiate dialog in the Computer Science community on how to develop these types of assessments. Several universities participated in our trial assessment and the disappointing results suggest that many students do not know how to program at the conclusion of their introductory courses. For a combined sample of 216 students from four universities, the average score was 22.89 out of 110 points on the general evaluation criteria developed for this study. From this trial assessment we developed a framework of expectations for first-year courses and suggestions for further work to develop more comprehensive assessments.
FIU's Applied Research Center is assisting the Department of Energy's Hanford Site by developing a computational program based on the lattice Boltzmann method in order to generate computer simulations of engineering problems involving multiphase flows.
High-statistics differential cross sections for the reactions γp → pη and γp → pη have been measured using the CEBAF large acceptance spectrometer (CLAS) at Jefferson Lab for center-of-mass energies from near threshold up to 2.84 GeV. The η results are the most precise to date and provide the largest energy and angular coverage. The η measurements extend the energy range of the world's large-angle results by approximately 300 MeV. These new data, in particular the η measurements, are likely to help constrain the analyses being performed to search for new baryon resonance states.
