The effect of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) on functional recovery after complete spinal cord transection in the rat was studied. Twelve rats (6 male and 6 female) received HCG daily for the first week and then every alternate day for three weeks. Ten rats (5 male and 5 female) served as controls. Return of bladder function, Tarlov's grading and measuring the maximum angle at which the rats were able to climb up an inclined plane were used as criteria in assessing the functional recovery. Improvement was noted in the HCG-treated rats by the end of two weeks. At six weeks the recovery of HCG-treated rats as compared to the control group was very significant (p less than 0.001). No recovery whatsoever was noted in the control group even after six weeks. Histological evidence of bridging of the gap between the cut ends of the spinal cord by nerve fibres containing tissue was noted in the HCG-treated rats only. The possible mode of action of HCG on spinal cord injury is briefly discussed.
Background:Numerous cross-sectional studies have suggested that chronic periodontitis is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. There is evidence that periodontitis and cardiovascular diseases are linked by inflammatory factors including C-reactive protein. The purpose of the study was to investigate the levels of CRP and PNM cells as a marker of inflammatory host response in the serum of chronic periodontitis patients and in patients with CVD.Materials and Methods:Study population included 75 patients; both male and female above 35 years were included for the study. The patients were divided into three groups of 25 each – Group I: Chronic periodontitis patients with CVD, Group II: Chronic periodontitis patients without CVD and Group III: Control subjects (without chronic periodontitis and CVD). Patients with chronic periodontitis had ≥8 teeth involved with probing depth (PD) ≥5 mm involved. The control group had PD ≤ 3 mm and no CVD. Venous blood was collected from the patients and C-reactive protein levels were analyzed by immunoturbidimetry. PMN was recorded by differential count method. Results:On comparison, OHI-S Index, GI, mean PD, CRP and PMN values showed significant difference from Group I to III. CRP level was highly significant in Group I when compared with Group II and Group III. PMN level was highly significant in Group I when compared with Group III PMN level which was not significant. Conclusion:This study indicated that periodontitis may add the inflammation burden of the individual and may result in increased levels of CVD based on serum CRP levels. Thus, controlled prospective trials with large sample size should be carried out to know the true nature of the relationship if indeed one exists.
Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) have been used extensively in the neurophysiological assessment of spinal cord integrity. However, SEPs mainly reflect the function of the dorsal column. In an effort to find a reliable method of assessing the integrity of the motor tracts for experimental purposes, we studied cortically evoked motor action potentials (CEMAPs). Twenty white rats used were anesthetized with ketamine, and extradural cortical stimulation was carried out through a parasagittal craniectomy posterior to the coronal suture. A single stimulus of 325 mV for a duration of 0.1 to 0.5 ms was used to obtain a motor action potential from the contralateral lower extremity. Complete transsection of the spinal cord abolished the CEMAP. A progressive increase in pressure applied to the spinal cord with a progressive increase in duration produced loss of the CEMAP. The selective motor tract study made possible by cortical stimulation makes this a good technique for studying the motor tracts in experimental work.
Periodontitis is a multifactorial disease with microbial dental plaque as the initiator of periodontal disease. However the manifestation and progression of the disease is influenced by a wide variety of determinants and factors. The strongest type of causal relationship is the association of systemic disease and periodontal disease. Similarly, we present a case of Hashimoto's thyroiditis which altered the periodontal therapy. Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease seen in children and women. A female patient diagnosed as chronic periodontitis was treated with periodontal flap surgical procedure with bone grafting as and where required. The 3 month reassessment showed fair prognosis obvious changes. However a year later the patient's periodontal status was severely deteriorated. Medical reports revealed Hashimoto's thyroiditis. A possible association of Periodontitis and Hashimoto's thyroiditis is considered in the case report.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
