A field experiment was conducted at the Horticultural Farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh during the period from December 2004 to April 2005 to evaluate the effect of manures and fertilizers on the yield of brinjal. There were five treatments consisting of organic, inorganic and combined sources of nutrients, of which the combined treatment (60 % organic +40% inorganic) showed the best performances. The maximum branching (20.1) with the highest number fruits/plant (15.2), fruit length (14.1 cm) and fruit diameter (4.3 cm) were found combined application of manures and fertilizers. The highest yield (45.5 t ha -1 ) was also obtained from the combined application of organic and inorganic sources of nutrients. Application of mustard oil cake or poultry manure alone gave better performance compared to only chemical fertilizers. The organic matter content and availability of N, P, K and S in soil were increased by organic matter application. On the other hand soil pH was increased with chemical application than organic.
The study was carried out at the farmer's field of Juri Upazilla, Maulavibazar District during 2008-2009, 2009-2010, and 2011-2012 to find out the proper combination of fertilizer nutrients that promotes better fruit yield and quality of mandarin (cv. Khashi Kamla). The treatments were Native nutrient i.e., control (TI), N150P50K150Mg30 (T2), N200P75K175Mg40 (T3), N250P100 K200Mg50 (T4), N300P125K225Mg60 (T5), and N200P75K175Mg0 (T6) g/plant/year. In addition, 20 kg cowdung/plant was used as blanket dose. Yield components, yield, and TSS content (%) of mandarin varied significantly due to variation of nutrients in all the test years. Fruit yield/plant was improved significantly with increase in NPK and Mg dose irrespective of years. Application of Mg in combination with NPK increased 17-157% mean fruit yield over magnesium control. Significantly the highest yield and yield attributes were recorded under treatment N300 P125 K225 Mg60 g/plant (T5) along with 20 kg cowdung/plant in all the years. Total soluble sugar (%) content was also maximum in trees receiving N300P125K225Mg30 g/plant. The highest gross margin and marginal rate of return were achieved by the same treatment (T5). The lowest fruit yield/plant was obtained from untreated control plot (native nutrient). Three years study revealed that application of N300P125K225Mg60 along with 20 kg cowdung/plant would be economically optimum for achieving higher yield and better fruit quality in mandarin grown under piedmont plain soil. An experiment was conducted to assess the influence of edible coatings on postharvest quality of mandarin during 20 days of ambient storage. Sorted fruits were washed; fruit surface water was removed and then coated with 100% liquid paraffin wax, 0.5% chitosan, 1.0% chitosan, 1.5% chitosan, and 100% coconut oil. After coating, fruit surface was air dried and kept at ambient condition (25±3 °C, 60–70% RH) and analyzed periodically for weight loss, respiration rate, firmness, decay incidence, TSS, pH, ascorbic acid content, and sensory properties. The results revealed that coconut oil had immense effect on the reduction of the weight loss and respiration rate and preserved firmness, total soluble solids, ascorbic acid, total sugar and reducing sugar and no incidence of moulds & their growth was found up to 16 days of storage.Int. Studies on fruiting, bearing habit and fruit growth of jackfruit was carried out at orchard
A laboratory experiment was conducted in the Crop Botany Laboratory , a t Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Salna, Gazipur during 15 October to 15 November, 2001 to study the influence of three temperature regimes (15OC, 25OC and 35OC) on germination characters and seed reserve qobilization in six wheat genotypes. Three heat tolerant ( Aghrani, Kanchan and CB-30) and three heat sensitive (Sonora, CB-24 and CB-34) wheat genotypes were used as study material. Speed of germination expressed a s rate of germination, coefficient of germination and germination vigor index was found to be increased with increasing temperature from 15 O C to 35OC in all wheat genotypes, but heat tolerant ability based on speed of germination was not found. Generally shoot and root growth of HS genotype in relation to length and dry weight were affected more than those of HT genotypes a t high temperature. The amount of seed reserve loss a s respiration increased from 25OC to 35OC in all genotypes, but the increment was higher in Sonora (14.1%) and CB-24 (13.21%), moderate in Kanchan (6.36%), CB-30 (5.22%) and CB-34 (4.95%) and lowest in Aghrani (2.03%). At 15OC, the amount of seed reserve loss a s respiration was also increased from that a t 25°C in all genotypes except in Aghrani and CB-30. But again the increment was higher in Sonora, CB-24 and CB-34 (2.79 to 8.84%) than that of Kanchan (1.67). In case of ~~h r a n i and CB-30, it even decreased. At 25OC temperature the seed reserve mobilization efficiency was significantly higher than that a t 15OC and 35OC in all wheat genotypes. But the heat sensitive genotypes had higher efficiency (2.58 to 3.48 glg) than that of the heat tolerant genotypes (1.99 to 2.09 gig) a t 25OC. Based on reduction of efficiency both a t 15OC and 35OC from that of 25OC, Sonora, CB-24 and CB-34 (HS) were found more affected than Aghrani, Kanchan and CB-30 (HT).
