Why do people get involved in refugee support and integration, while others campaign against it? In search of an answer to this question, the authors of this study interview committed volunteers from both sides across Germany and gain deeper insights into their work. Impartial and without any stereotypes, the book presents and compares the motives and aims of both parties. To enable a better understanding of individual perspectives, it also considers the results of the interviews within a psychological framework. It is apparent that both sides pursue different strategies in dealing with the insecurity caused by the refugee issue. Although both sides would actually like to have a fair dialogue with each other, they are too entrenched in their respective positions due to negative experiences or prejudices. This is the first of two books on this research project which offer readers an exciting insight into the thoughts and actions of those who are involved in this field.
