Introduction: Occurrence of natal teeth are extremely rare and the commonly seen teeth are lower primary incisors, which generally occurs in pairs. The natal tooth seen is early eruption of deciduous incisors. The prevalence of natal and neonatal teeth reported ranges from 1:2,000 to 1:3,500. Case Report: A 32-day-old male infant was referred to the OPD of DY Patil Dental College and Hospital with a complaint of one tooth in the lower jaw at birth. Clinical evaluation showed presence of one tooth in the mandibular anterior region with Grade I mobility. Moons probe was used to relieve the gingival margin. Primary anterior mandibular forceps was used to extract the tooth. Patient was evaluated after one week, healing was uneventful. No difficulty in breast feeding was reported by the mother. No history of fever was reported by the mother one week after the day of extraction. Complete resolution of Riga-Fede on the ventral aspect of the tongue observed one week after the day of extraction. Conclusion: Follow-up is essential for treatment of natal teeth along with parent counselling to bring about awareness eliminating misconceptions surrounding natal teeth.
Background: Ideal requirement of an intracanal medicament is that it should have an antibacterial action for the success of endodontic procedures. The "golden standard" intracanal medication is calcium hydroxide, but it still has drawbacks like internal root resorption. The search for an ideal intracanal medication that works well is an ongoing process that is still unsuccessful. In this pilot study, we attempted to search for new materials by drawing motivation from the earlier time. Ayurveda, started in India 3000 years back. Since many herbal products have demonstrated antibacterial, antiseptic, and analgesic properties, there has been renewed interest in them in recent years. Aim: To compare in-vitro, the antibacterial efficacy of a combination of herbal extracts i.e nutmeg + aloe vera, nutmeg + neem and nutmeg + distilled water with calcium hydroxide as an intracanal medicament on Enterococcus faecalis. Materials and Methods: The ATCC strain 29212 of the bacterium E. faecalis was used in the study. Mueller Hinton agar plate was vaccinated with E. faecalis. The herbal extract mixtures were pipetted into the agar wells on this agar plate, which had four wells with diameters ranging from 8 to 10 millimeters. After using calcium hydroxide as a control, which is the gold standard for intracanal medication, the plate was incubated. The width of the restraint zones around every one of the wells were estimated physically after hatching for 48 hrs. Results: The highest zone of inhibition was seen around the wells containing Nutmeg and its combinations. Nutmeg showed better antibacterial efficacy when compared to calcium hydroxide. Conclusion: Nutmeg shows promising results for its use as an antibacterial intracanal medicament.
Introduction: Thalassemia can be classified into alpha and beta depending on the reduced synthesis of alpha or beta chains present in hemoglobin (Hb),1 that results in reduced hemoglobin in body than normal. Aims: Aims at signifing the importance of timely dental treatment in Beta thalassemia patients. Case Report: Here we present a known case of beta thalassemia minor requiring a full mouth rehabilitation treatment performed dental chair-side. Discussion: Thalassemia minor patients inherit only a single beta-globin mutation and have a mild anemia.2 The evaluated predominance of β-thalassemia minor (carriers) in India is 3-8%, which transforms to 35-45 million carriers in 1.3 billion diverse population with culturally and linguistically multi-ethnic people.3. Conclusion: Several ethnic groups have a much higher prevalence of 4–17%.4 The Beta thalassemia minor cases usually go undetected and are often observed in tests for dental treatment or post-dental treatment.
Background: A dentifrice and a toothbrush are universal armamentariums for oral hygiene maintenance. The presence of fluoride in commercial dentifrices aids in dental caries prevention. The fluoride content and compound are mentioned on the packaging along with the time of manufacture and its shelf life. Aim: To evaluate the fluoride concentration of dentifrices available commercially over a period of time from the date of manufacture. To compare any variations in the fluoride concentration over time to the content present at manufacture. Methodology: This is an In vitro comparative observational study. 8 Standard dentifrices easily available Over the Counter were selected, of which 3 were for adult use, 2 were herbal and 3 were for kids. They were subjected to fluoride analysis and the fluoride content was assessed using spectrophotometric analysis, by a single blinded examiner. The test sample was compared to a standard solution, in a calibration curve to determine the fluoride concentration. Results: On analysis it was seen that adult toothpaste samples had fluoride concentration lower than 1000ppm as mentioned on the label. One herbal toothpaste had fluoride concentration of 1039.62ppm which was higher than that mentioned on the label. One kids toothpaste had fluoride concentration of 905.25ppm which was higher than that mentioned on the label. Conclusion: The toothpastes included in the study had dissimilar fluoride concentrations after analysis than the concentration mentioned on the label. Thus, waranting better laws and standardization methods for toothpastes.
