Recent studies demonstrated that one of the major components of the copaiba oil, β-caryophyllene, has an anti-inflammatory effect. 4 Copaiba oil is extracted from the copaifera, a Abstract Many medicinal plants are sought as alternative therapies for various conditions, as opposed to synthetic alternatives. The Brazilian Amazon provides a plethora of plants with various therapeutic and medicinal properties. One of them is copaiba oil, a natural product of the biodiversity of the Amazon. The anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties of copaiba oil have been drawing the attention of the scientific community as a great alternative in the treatment of illnesses associated with inflammatory and infectious processes. The purpose of the present study is to evaluate and analyze the latest publications on the use of copaiba oil in the PubMed/Medline database from 2014 to 2017. Forty-two articles were collected, verifying anti-inflammatory activity, antimicrobial activity, healing, and antitumor activity. The results found on researches with copaiba oil according to publication dates were 11.9% in 2014, 38.1% in 2015, 16.7% in 2016, and 33.3% in 2017. In the analyzed studies, the proposed administration of copaiba oil was 50% topical, 28.6% oral, 9.5% enteral, 4.8% subcutaneous, and 7.1% others. In the objectives of the presente study in relation to the administration of copaiba oil, the result was 31% antimicrobial, 28.6% anti-inflammatory, 9.5% antitumor, 9.5% healing, and 21% others. Regarding the types of research, we have found 50% in vitro, 40.4% in vivo animals, 2.4% in vivo human, 2.4% review and 4.8% others. Regarding the significance factor evaluation, the result was 100% positive in antitumor activity, 84% positive in infection and inflammation pathology, 62% positive in others, like dental processes, food technology application support and as a drug absorption vehicle, and 50% in healing. The results presented in the current meta-analysis show that copaiba oil is an effective alternative to treatments of illnesses such as chronic inflammation, infectious diseases, various types of cancer, autoimmune diseases, and as a vehicle for the absorption of other drugs. Thus, more studies regarding the benefits of copaiba oil could provide a great contribution to the medical community in the treatment of the aforementioned illnesses.
Introduction: The mitochondria are essential in numerous physiological processes, including energy production, redox potential, modulation of calcium and several metabolic pathways. When the number or mitochondrial activity is insufficient, the human body quickly goes into fatigue due to ATP deficiency. Methods: The principal data base were used: PubMed, Medline, Scielo and Lilacs. Keywords used were: mitochondrial biogenesis, aging, organic acids, enzyme changes and respiratory chain. Groups considered: young and aged. Types of training: aerobic and anaerobic. Papers dealing with pathogies were not considered. The oxidative capacity of muscle tissue and the preservation of mitochondria depends on the mitochondrial biogenesis that occurs through the transcription factor proliferator-activator receptor-γ coactivatorlα (PGC-1α). The oxidative process and the progressive change in the biogenesis of mitochondria have direct influence on the aging of muscle tissue. The regulation of the biogenesis occurs through the PGC-1α combined with nuclear respiratory factor 1 (NRF1). Abnormalities in mitochondria and mutagenesis in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) are tied to multi-system degeneration, as well as intolerance to stress, and decreased energy in aging in humans, rats and monkeys. The mitochondrial functions are dramatically altered in heart disease, demonstrating a decrease in expression of PGC-1α, which plays a key role in the coordination of energy metabolism. This process can be reversed by the PGC-1α itself. The identification of compounds capable of activating the transcription of PGC-1α could be part of future therapies to reverse pathologies associated with the decline of this organelle. Morpho-physiological and biochemical changes of these organelles directly reflect the physiological performance of all body tissues. Conclusion: evidence demonstrated that physical activity, both in young and aged is a major ally in mitochondrial biogenesis by activating the transcription of PGC - 1α and that future nutritional interventions may be of great aid in the health and performance of mitochondria. However, further studies are needed in order to understand and clarify this operation, since currently these mechanisms are only partially known.
Abstract Cannabis has been used as a medicinal plant for thousands of years in Asia. Numerous physical, psychological, and emotional benefits have been attributed to cannabis since its first reported use in 2,600 BC in a Chinese pharmacopoeia. Recent years have seen a resurgence in interest in the therapeutic potential of compounds derived from these plants, mainly the non-psychoactive compound cannabidiol (CBD). In this way, we seek to evaluate, through this present study, what has been published about CBD in the Pubmed / Medline database in the last two years (2019/2020) in relation to anxiety, depression, panic attack and dementia, as well as therapeutic dosages, results with significant values, side effects and others reported in the studies found. The results were distributed in 4 tables. In the first, the types of publication were reported; in the second, the proposal for evaluation; in the third, the results with significance evaluated; and in the fourth the doses used. Although the majority of studies found are in the form of a review (55.3%), several studies in humans have shown promising results with the use of CBD in therapies. The treatments for anxiety and stress with CBD were the most evident accounting for 37.8% of the total studies found in table 2. The relationship of CBD in metabolic processes as inflammatory markers, activator of specific nuclear receptors and protein modulations was the second most evident item na tabela 2 with 11,1%. Cognitive processes and depression appear comes in sequence with 8.9% both. The results of significance values found in this study demonstrated a good acceptance in the treatment with CBD regarding anxiety and stress. With 70.6% of positive results in table 3, CBD appears as a promising option in the treatment of anxiety, stress and similar behaviors. Regarding depression, the results were slightly lower. With 66.6% positive results, depression can also be treated with CBD as an alternative therapy option. In dose used CBD administration are extremely diverse. The doses ranged from 25mg to 800mg depending on the time of administration and also the purpose of the therapy. Although the results presented in this study are promising, we need more information to be able to position ourselves on the efficiency of CBD in proposed treatments.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
