Muscle Mass (MM) has an important role in health and physical performance. There are many MM prediction equations, but none is formulated in Indonesia. This study aimed to develop Anthropometric Equations (AE) prediction for MM. A cross sectional study was used to formulate AE prediction through multiple regression analysis. The significance of observed differences between predicted and actual MM was tested by t test while level of agreement was assessed by Bland Altman plot. A significant correlation was found between MM and height, body mass index, calf/arm/waist circumferences, and waist hip ratio (p<0.05). Regression anal¬ysis indicated that age, height, and Mid Arm Circumference (MAC) contributed significantly to MM. The resulting equation was MM (kg) = -10.22+(-.097x age)+(0.16xheight)+(0.30xMAC). There was no significant difference between actual and predicted MM results, and both had significant correlation. These results suggest that age, AP related to MM and AE provide valid prediction of MM for healthy elderly women in Jakarta.
Introduction: The increase in the elderly population causes many health problems. One of them is the decline in physical function, making the elderly have difficulty performing daily activities. Some studies suggest the relation between decreased hemoglobin level with aerobic endurance and muscle strength. This study aims to determine the relation between hemoglobin and aerobic endurance, muscle strength in the elderly. Methods: This research is an analytic-correlative research conducted cross-sectionally on 84 respondents in Kelurahan Cideng, Central Jakarta. The data is collected from questionnaires, hemoglobin level (sodium lauryl sulfate-hemoglobin method), and physical performance tests (2-minutes test, arm curl test, and chair stand test). Results: The mean hemoglobin level is 14.37 g/dL. There was a significant relation between hemoglobin with aerobic endurance (p<0.05), whereas no significant relation between hemoglobin with upper and lower limb muscle strength (p>0.05). Conclusion: There was a relation between hemoglobin level with aerobic endurance in the elderly.
Introduction: The world is entering an aging population. With aging comes many challenges due to changes of the brain structure that affect both cognitive function and balance. The amount of cognitive function and balance impairment cases in the elderly are rising. If left unattended, it can cause numerous adverse effects in the elderly, eventually leading to the loss of the ability to perform activities of daily living. Studies have observed the relationship between cognitive impairment and balance in Indonesia, but only a few were conducted in Jakarta, specifically among elders in the nursing home. This study is aimed to observe the association between cognitive function and balance in the elderly.Methods: This is a secondary analysis using a previous study conducted in PSTW Budi Mulia Jakarta in 2016. Demographic data, cognitive function, and balance were assessed using the demographic questionnaire, Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), and Berg Balance Scale (BBS). Statistical analysis is conducted using IBM SPSS Ver 22.Results: Most respondents were female, aged 60-69 years old, had low education level, good MMSE score (53,3%), and a normal BBS (90,7%) score. We found a significant relationship between cognitive functions and balance (p=0,045).Conclusion: Cognitive function is related to balance impairment in the elderly. Smoking is known to have bad effects on health. People start using e-cigarettes with the assumption that e-cigarettes are safer, but the safety of e-cigarettes is still in doubt. Harmful substances from cigarettes can trigger an increase in free radicals and induce inflammatory process. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the increase of serum Interleukin-1? due to exposure to conventional cigarette smoke and e-cigarette vapor based on exposure time. This study was conducted experimentally on 30 male white rats Sprague Dawley strain. The rats were divided into five treatment groups (control group, two and four weeks of exposure to conventional cigarette smoke, and two and four weeks of exposure to electronic cigarette vapor). Smoking session was given once a day. The rats were sacrificed then necropsied and Interleukin-? levels were calculated using the enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) Kit. The data obtained were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) statistical test. Exposure to conventional cigarette smoke and e-cigarette vapor did not give any significant changes to Interleukin-1? level in rats, both at two weeks and four weeks of exposure. However, there was a tendency of increased Interleukin-1? levels with increasing time. This tendency is more obvious in groups with exposure to conventional cigarette.
