This paper characterizes non-indigenous fish species (NIS) and analyses both atmospheric and sea surface temperatures for the Mediterranean coast of Egypt from 1991 to 2020, in relation to previous reports in the same areas. Taxonomical characterization depicts 47 NIS from the Suez Canal (Lessepsian/alien) and 5 from the Atlantic provenance. GenBank accession number of the NIS mitochondrial gene, cytochrome oxidase 1, reproductive and commercial biodata, and a schematic Inkscape drawing for the most harmful Lessepsian species were reported. For sea surface temperatures (SST), an increase of 1.2 °C to 1.6 °C was observed using GIS software. The lack of linear correlation between annual air temperature and annual SST at the same detection points (Pearson r) could suggest a difference in submarine currents, whereas the Pettitt homogeneity test highlights a temperature breakpoint in 2005–2006 that may have favoured the settlement of non-indigenous fauna in the coastal sites of Damiette, El Arish, El Hammam, Alexandria, El Alamain, and Mersa Matruh, while there seems to be a breakpoint present in 2001 for El Sallum. This assessment of climate trends is in good agreement with the previous sightings of non-native fish species. New insights into the assessment of Egyptian coastal climate change are discussed.
Trichomonas vaginalis is the causative agent of one of the most widespread sexually transmitted diseases in the world. The adhesion of the parasite to the vaginal epithelial cells is mediated by specific proteins and by a complex glycan structure, the lipoglycan (TvLG), which covers the pathogen surface. L-rhamnose is an important component of TvLG, comprising up to 40% of the monosaccharides. Thus, the inhibition of its production could lead to a severe alteration in the TvLG structure, making the L-rhamnose biosynthetic pathway an attractive pharmacologic target. We report the identification and characterization of the first committed and limiting step of the L-rhamnose biosynthetic pathway, UDP-D-glucose 4,6-dehydratase (UGD, EC 4.2.1.76). The enzyme shows a strong preference for UDP-D-glucose compared to dTDP-D-glucose; we propose that the mechanism underlying the higher affinity for the UDP-bound substrate is mediated by the differential recognition of ribose versus the deoxyribose of the nucleotide moiety. The identification of the enzymes responsible for the following steps of the L-rhamnose pathway (epimerization and reduction) was more elusive. However, sequence analyses suggest that in T. vaginalis L-rhamnose synthesis proceeds through a mechanism different from the typical eukaryotic pathways, displaying intermediate features between the eukaryotic and prokaryotic pathways and involving separate enzymes for the epimerase and reductase activities, as observed in bacteria. Altogether, these results form the basis for a better understanding of the formation of the complex glycan structures on TvLG and the possible use of L-rhamnose biosynthetic enzymes for the development of selective inhibitors.
Antifoulant paints were developed to prevent and reduce biofouling on surfaces immersed in seawater. The widespread use of these substances over the years has led to a significant increase of their presence in the marine environment. These compounds were identified as environmental and human threats. As a result of an international ban, research in the last decade has focused on developing a new generation of benign antifoulant paints. This review outlines the detrimental effects associated with biocide versus eco-friendly antifoulants, highlighting what are effective antifoulants and why there is a need to monitor them. We examine the effects of biocide and eco-friendly antifoulants on the antioxidative defence mechanism and settlement in a higher sessile organism, specifically the Mediterranean mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis. These antifoulants can indirectly assess the potential of these two parameters in order to outline implementation of sustainable antifoulants.

Lo studio ha condotto al chiarimento di alcuni aspetti del complesso monumentale del foro emiliano di Terracina (gallerie sostruttive ; area lastricata ; via Appia ; monumenti), estendendosi all'esposizione di problemi riguardanti lo sviluppo urbanistico della città. Il ruolo guida svolto dal foro nelle vicende storiche dell'abitato è del resto chiaro fin dalla sua progettazione e costruzione, attuata attraverso ambienti a volta che sostruiscono l'area lastricata : di essi si sono individuati gli accessi e proposto una parziale ricostruzione. Il rilievo archeologico della pavimentazione ha permesso di evidenziare sul lastricato une serie di impronte, per lo più riferibili ad altrettanti monumenti (are, sacelli, basi di statue) ; infine, si è definita l'estensione dell'area, e la sistemazione degli edifici che dovevano aprirsi sul foro, anche per quei lati ancora parzialemente occupati da edifici moderni.
