Considering current criteria for nutritional risk, NRS 2002 and MNA-SF have similar performance to predict outcomes but NRS 2002 seems to provide a best yield.
BackgroundTenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF), a widely prescribed component in antiretroviral regimens, has been associated with nephrotoxicity. Nebivolol is a third generation selective β-1 adrenergic receptor blocker and may protect renal structure and function through the suppression of oxidative stress and enhancement of nitric oxide (NO) synthesis. We aimed to investigate whether nebivolol could be an effective therapeutic strategy to mitigate tenofovir-induced nephrotoxicity.MethodsWe allocated Wistar rats to four groups: control (C), received a standard diet for 30 days; NBV, received a standard diet for 30 days added with nebivolol (100 mg/kg food) in the last 15 days; TDF, received a standard diet added with tenofovir (300 mg/kg food) for 30 days; and TDF+NBV, received a standard diet added with tenofovir for 30 days and nebivolol in the last 15 days.ResultsLong-term exposure to tenofovir led to impaired renal function, induced hypertension, endothelial dysfunction and oxidative stress. Nebivolol treatment partially recovered glomerular filtration rate, improved renal injury, normalized blood pressure and attenuated renal vasoconstriction. Administration of nebivolol contributed to reductions in asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) levels as well as increases in endothelial nitric oxide sintase (eNOS) accompanied by renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system downregulation and decreases in macrophage and T-cells infiltrate. Furthermore, nebivolol was responsible for the maintenance of the adequate balance of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and glutathione (GSH) levels and it was associated with reductions in NADPH oxidase (NOX) subunits.ConclusionNebivolol holds multifaceted actions that promote an advantageous option to slow the progression of kidney injury in tenofovir-induced nephrotoxicity.
Serum concentrations of 25-hydroxycholecalciferol [25(OH)D3] in broiler embryos at 19 d of incubation:doi:have been shown to increase 3 times by the in ovo injection of 0.60 μg 25(OH)D3 on 18 doi. In this trial, effects of the injection of 25(OH)D3 at 18 doi on the yolks and sera of male and female Ross×Ross 708 broiler embryos were assessed. On 18 doi, embryonated eggs that were set in a single stage incubator were assigned to 6 replicate trays within each of 2 injection treatment groups. Treatments included those injected with 100 μL commercial diluent (control) and those injected with 0.60 μg 25(OH)D3 in 100 μL commercial diluent. On 19 doi, embryos and their yolk sacs were extracted for determination of sex, yolk weight, BW, serum CA and phosphorous concentrations, and yolk CA, phosphorous, moisture, dry matter, and lipid concentrations. The weight of female embryos with their attached yolk sacs as a percentage of set egg weight was greater than that of males (P=0.03). There were treatment×sex interactions for the weight of embryos with their attached yolk sacs relative to 19 doi egg weight (P=0.05) and for yolk CA concentration (P=0.004). In eggs that received 25(OH)D3, the weight of female embryos with their attached yolk sacs relative to 19 doi egg weight was higher than that of males (P=0.005), and percentage yolk CA was higher in control eggs containing female embryos in comparison to those containing males (P=0.007). An injection of 0.60 μg 25(OH)D3 at 18 doi eliminated yolk CA differences associated with embryo sex, suggesting that 25(OH)D3 may influence sex-related differences in the rate of yolk CA absorption by broiler embryos and may be related to subsequent sex-related differences in posthatch bone strength.
Studying the dietary habits and symptoms of postmenopausal women during situations such as the COVID-19 pandemic is important to mitigate long-term post-pandemic health problems. We compared the menopausal symptoms and food consumption in postmenopausal women before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. A longitudinal survey was conducted on postmenopausal Brazilian women between 2018 and 2021. The Kupperman–Blatt Menopausal Index, Women’s Health Questionnaire, and 24 h food recall were used. Of 274 women, 78 (28.5%) participated in the study during the COVID-19 pandemic. The intensity of the symptoms was lower during the pandemic than during the previous period (p < 0.05). Energy and processed food consumption were lower during the pandemic than before (p = 0.003 and p = 0.003, respectively). Milk and plain yogurt consumption were also lower (p = 0.043), while the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and sweet foods was higher (p = 0.007 and p = 0.001, respectively) during the pandemic. There was also a decrease in the consumption of proteins and lipids (p = 0.001 and p = 0.004, respectively). In conclusion, we found that postmenopausal women consumed sweet foods and sugar-sweetened beverages in higher quantities and had a lower consumption of milk and plain yogurt and processed foods during the pandemic than during the pre-pandemic period. Furthermore, decreases in energy and macronutrient consumption were observed.
