ChemInform Abstract 2-Mercaptobenzoic acid (I) is converted to the 2-mercaptobenzylphosphonium salt (IV) which reacts with the acyl chlorides (V) in the presence of triethylamine, yielding the 2-substituted benzothiophenes (VI). The phosphonium salt (IV) reacts with the 2-halo ketones (VII) and two equivalents of sodium methoxide to form the benzothiopyrans (VIII).
