The fear-avoidance model of chronic musculoskeletal pain has become an increasingly popular conceptualization of the processes and mechanisms through which acute pain can become chronic. Despite rapidly growing interest and research regarding the influence of fear-avoidance constructs on pain-related disability in children and adolescents, there have been no amendments to the model to account for unique aspects of pediatric chronic pain. A comprehensive understanding of the role of fear-avoidance in pediatric chronic pain necessitates understanding of both child⁄adolescent and parent factors implicated in its development and maintenance. The primary purpose of the present article is to propose an empirically-based pediatric fear-avoidance model of chronic pain that accounts for both child⁄adolescent and parent factors as well as their potential interactive effects. To accomplish this goal, the present article will define important fear-avoidance constructs, provide a summary of the general fear-avoidance model and review the growing empirical literature regarding the role of fear-avoidance constructs in pediatric chronic pain. Assessment and treatment options for children with chronic pain will also be described in the context of the proposed pediatric fear-avoidance model of chronic pain. Finally, avenues for future investigation will be proposed.
Recent experiments with rats suggest that they show episodic-like or what-where-when memory for a preferred food found on a radial maze. Although memory for when a salient event occurred suggests that rats can mentally travel in time to a moment in the past, an alternative possibility is that they remember how long ago the food was found. Three groups of rats were tested for memory of previously encountered food. The different groups could use only the cues of when, how long ago, or when + how long ago. Only the cue of how long ago food was encountered was used successfully. These results suggest that episodic-like memory in rats is qualitatively different from human episodic memory.
In 4 experiments, the authors asked whether pigeons (Columba livia) would show metamemory by choosing to study a sample stimulus before taking a memory test. In Experiments 1a-1c, pigeons chose between cues that led either to exposure to a sample stimulus or directly to the comparison test stimuli without seeing the sample in a delayed matching-to-sample task. The same choice was used in Experiment 2 to see whether pigeons would take a reminder when memory of the sample was weak. In Experiments 3 and 4, pigeons' responses led to either a choice between red and green side keys with a sample present to guide the choice or a choice with no sample present. The findings of all of these experiments suggest the absence of metamemory in pigeons.
Despite the well-documented benefits of exercise, adherence among patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) has been low during and after cardiac rehabilitation (CR) as well as among patients not attending CR. Therefore, an understanding of the factors that influence exercise in this population is crucial to assist in the development of effective interventions. The goal of this review was to document the correlates of exercise of CHD patients in all CR contexts from a social-ecological perspective that addresses multiple levels of influence on exercise. The search strategy included PubMed, PsychINFO and Web of Science databases. In all, 121 studies, examining 32 different correlates of exercise, with a total of 25 217 participants were included. Across all CR contexts, six variables were consistently related to exercise (self-regulatory self-efficacy, health status, intention, perceived control, beliefs/benefits and previous physical activity). Several variables were also related to exercise in three of four contexts (e.g. task self-efficacy, perceived barriers, attitude, action planning, sex and employment status). Many of the variables consistently related to exercise may be amenable to change through the development and implementation of appropriate interventions. Specific suggestions are made for each relevant variable to assist CR staff and other healthcare practitioners in 32 promoting exercise among CHD patients. Current gaps in literature such as a lack of prospective studies and research examining broader (e.g. policy level) correlates are also discussed.
