Chalcogenide-TiCl 4 -Mediated Reactions of S-Ethyl Thioacrylate with Aldehydes. -The reaction of thioacrylate (II) with aldehydes (I) in the presence of stoichiometric amounts of TiCl 4 and catalytic amounts of Me 2 S followed by treatment with base (DBU or Ti(OiPr) 4 ) gives thioacrylates (III) or transesterificated acrylates (V) and (VI) in fair to good yields. It is found that chloromethyl derivatives such as (VIII) and (IX) are the main products obtained after the chalcogenide/TiCl 4 -mediated reaction.-(KATAOKA,
