Current epidemiology status shows a declining trend in COVID-19 cases. For this reason, Indonesia has begun to relax several regulations regarding COVID-19 as the preparation for transition pandemic to endemic. During this time, the Animal Physiology practicum was carried out face-to-face for the first time since the pandemic occurred. This study seeks to investigate the implementation of the Animal Physiology practicum in the preparation for the pandemic-toendemic COVID-19 transition at the Biology Education Study Program, Universitas Sulawesi Barat. This is a qualitative descriptive study where the data was collected by interviewing relevant respondents. Question indicators were regarding practicum preparation, practicum implementation, assistants' roles, equipment condition and availability of practicum materials, evaluation, and obstacles during practicum implementation. The result of the study reveals that the Animal Physiology practicum was well implemented. It appears that the practicum was designed by still considering the health protocol for COVID-19. The adjustments were seen from the preparation to the practicum evaluation. However, there are some obstacles experienced due to some COVID-19 regulations such as the limitation of interaction between students during the practicum and not all practicum units as in the practicum guide could be conducted.
Universitas Sulawesi Barat (Unsulbar) launched its primary Learning Management System (LMS) named E-learning of Universitas Sulawesi Barat or often called “E-learning Unsulbar” in 2020 (https://elearning.unsulbar.ac.id/). Implementing E-learning at Unsulbar is one of the university’s efforts to maximize distance learning, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. A study was conducted to evaluate E-learning readiness to measure the readiness of new students of the Biology Education Study Program towards the E-learning implementation. It is a quantitative descriptive study using a survey method adapted from a questionnaire developed by Akaslan and Law. The respondents were 77 new students from the biology education class of 2020 in the odd semester of 2020-2021. The measurement adapts three main stages, i.e., readiness (technology, people, institutions, content), acceptance, and training. The result showed that the readiness of new students for E-learning Unsulbar for technology and training factors were 3.1 and 3.3, respectively. It was categorized as not ready, which means that there needed to be more readiness of students’ internet infrastructures and academics who need training in using E-learning Unsulbar. Meanwhile, the scores for the factor of people, institutions, content, and acceptance were 3.8, 4.2, 3.85, and 3.9, respectively, and categorized as ready to be implemented. This result is an evaluation material for the university in determining the right policy for implementing E-learning Unsulbar.
Beru-Beru is one of the hamlets located in a mountainous area in Ongko Village, Campalagian, Polewali Mandar, West Sulawesi. In this hamlet, most of the residents work as cocoa farmers. However, the cocoa pod husk cannot be utilized optimally and ussually are abandoned as waste in the plantation area and produces an unpleasant odor. The method of this community service activities were through training and mentoring. The activity were attended by 20 participants from the villagers, 5 village officials, and students of the Program Studi Pendidikan Biologi of Universitas Sulawesi Barat. The training activities were carried out by involving community groups including youth organizations, housewives and several Ongko Village officials as the partners. The purpose of this activity was to provide material counseling related to the utilization of cocoa pod husk into charcoal briquettes and its processing. The whole activity was remarkable, which was indicated by the interest and enthusiasm of the attandee in participating in the entire series of activities, especially when practicing the making of charcoal briquette. These products can provide additional value to local commodities because they were made from cocoa pod husks which are considered as wastes and cocoa as one of the largest agricultural commodities at Beru-Beru, Ongko Village. Cocoa briquettes can be used as an alternative energy source or renewable fuel.
